Legally speaking, how does collaborative work between countries work?

I used the term "original writer" as basically the first guy with the idea. Everything I am writing is an inquiry, I have no knowledge of any of this, all new to me. Hoping to gain a reasonable perspective on how folks work out these details, in case I try collaborating in the future.
