Lessons in the Dallas/Fort Worth area

Post by withlovefromTX » Sat Jan 16, 2016 12:49 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to the music industry and I need your help.
I am a singer songwriter and learn quickly but need to learn a chorded instrument really well.
Do you know of a great (preferably a blues) piano instructor and/or a ukelele instructor in the DFW area?

I already have a friend who owns a music school but he's too far away to get to a lesson on time during a week day.

Any leads would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Michelle,

I'm out east, but I can tell you that as someone who tuned pianos full time for thirty years, I was constantly asked by customers if I knew a good music teacher. And I always did, because I tuned for them!

So if nothing else, you might try calling some piano tuner/technicians in your area and asking them. Also, maybe some of the college music departments can be a source of good info. Many times they have adjuncts there who give private lessons.

Good luck!

Loren, i know this is off topic from the original post, but I found it interesting that you tuned pianos professionally for 30 years! Thats an interesting gig... I imagine you have a lot of fun stories to tell, meeting and interacting with different musical personalities. Anyway, I enjoy learning about the background of other taxi members.

Best regards,
Tim

Depending on your local infrastructure/internet connecton, you may be able to telecommute via Skype or Facetime. Packet data and VOIP are asynchronous, so you can't play together in realtime with your instructor, but it works okay for anything else you might want to learn or teach.

Hey there, Tim! Yeah, tuning was pretty cool. Got to tune for some fairly big names! Debbie Boone, Jim Brickman, and Paul Anka, to name a few. This was when they came to perform at a local college Celebrity Series. It was always fun being alone on a concert stage getting a piano ready for the performer. I ended up stopping because of what it was doing to my body. Thirty years of pounding keys with the same hand (when you settle strings, you're hitting the keys pretty hard -- harder than you would normally play), started wreaking havoc on my fingers, hand and arm. Numbness, pain, etc. I decided that thirty years was enough and that I didn't want to jeopardize my ability to play. So that was that!

There are times that I miss it, but I don't see myself going back to it.

What part of Dallas? A good friend of mine founded the Dallas School of Music about 20 years ago, it is based in Carrlloton/Addison. Check them out at www.dsminfo.com.

Thanks for your help, guys. :)
I appreciate you taking the time to give some direction.
I think I've found someone who's close & knowledgeable.

Have an excellent week!
:D

p.s.
When I'm done with a post and it no longer "applies", how do I delete them? Ideas?
