Like or Dislike

Post by dada » Thu Oct 11, 2007 2:23 pm

Hey all, Been lingering around listening to all the great stuff.. I finally got out of the summer mode and have been back to tweaking recording and writing skills... If you get a chance to listen to "Got Saved" on the top of the soundclick page, I would appreciate any comments on the piece... It's not all perfect, but a good start... I've been playing around with getting a bolder mix quality..Thanks,Davehttp://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=189280

I liked it, kinda got that art metal thing like Tool or Queensryche to me. It didn't blow my doors wide open, not sure why, I think it has something to do with the structure, even though those bands take a lot of liberties with traditional pop songwriting form there's almost always an obvious chorus and I didn't hear that here. I like the guitar and bass sounds alot, the singer sounds like he's kind of struggling with it a little, sometimes a little pitchy, sometimes sounds like his voice is stuck in his throat. I think that's a good direction though for tv listings, not that I've placed any myself but I hear alot of that type of stuff in tv shows. Keep workin' at it. elser

I liked it. Had sort of a late 90's post-grunge vibe. Like a huskier Porno for Pyros. The singer has a cool voice, but I'm not sure if it fits the song though. Maybe it's a mix thing....not sure. Sounds good though. Maybe tuck him back a little and user a dryer approach with regards to effects. Just my 2 cents-Dax

Hi there. Finally had a chance to listen. It is kinda grunge-ish. Feels like the vocals are slightly buried in the mix, and so it feels to the listener as though he's struggling. There's a brushy sort of thing in the percussion that's too forward in the mix. When there are no vocals, the mix sounds muddy - it's hard to figure out what to listen to. Kinda an odd ending too. I'm mentioning the production aspects because it's hard to assess the quality of the songwriting when everything is kinda squished together. I can hear things that have potential, just feel that a cleaner, simpler mix would allow the song to shine a bit more.cheersHummin'bird PS - I'd shorten the intro to 15 secs. Get to the meat of the song fast as most times you have 30 secs to get their attention.

DADAI wish there were lyrics to look at......I'm not sure if this is a Christian song or not...l thought it may be but couldn't really understand anything the singer said without straining...and i am too burnt at the end of the day to strain.....BRING the lead VOX up ....If there is a message then it needs to be heard whether grunge, rap or whatever....That said, there is an audience for this as you well know.....But personally I feel you can be on the cutting edge and still be heard....A re-mix is in order

Hey Dave, I like (good bass sound) but there are a couple of things you should adress, shorten the intro and ramp up the hook a bit. As we have all heard at one time or another (me, it was my first post in Peer to Peer, I remember it like yesterday, the song was Obs... wait we're talking about your song ) the intro has to be shortened (Control has a good intro) and your choruses have to be more defined and moved up in the song. I didn't hear "Got Saved" until over a minute into the song so you want to move that up. Most of the more experienced members will tell you you got basically 30secs to make an impression so keep that in mind (if you are planning to submit)... Keep at it, Geo

Wow,Thanks for all of the input.. Sorry I haven't visited back lately, work has been dragging me down a little..ELSERI agree the chorus demands something more.. It is definitely not the normal pop rock style chorus you hear nowadays.. Singing is a struggle for me in most regards.. I've spent so much time singing quitely to not disturb the family, I think I forgot how to do it properly.. Thanks for your insight..DIOGENESI am playing around with a better vocal sound.. I have been stuck in one treatment and am trying to get out of that box.. Glad you found some enjoymeny in the pieceH-BIRDI am surprised the mix didn't appeal to you.. Most that have heard this remark on how puchy and dynamic it is.. I am curious as to what kind of system you are listening to it on.. the brush sound you hear is probably the cymbals and hi-hat.. They are a little crisp.. It is truly an art to make these types of harsh instrument mixes come to life..STEVEI have to admit the lyrics are not completed and most of my vocals are pieces parts.. It will be Christian themed with the obvious title, but the words have yet to be given to me.. I think the song appears to say something, so it does demand a message.. Like I said, work-in-progress (like everything else)..GEOThanks for the comments.. I am trying to just create interesting things at the moment and not necessarily using the rules of the hit song that you have mentioned, although I do understand their philosophy.. The intro could be easily shortened.. The Chrous hook will be harder on this one.. I would like to join TAXI someday if my skills ever completely come around.. Something I am continually on the fence on..

Dada,Well, I must say I enjoyed this song quite a bit!I think you've done an admirable job of what it was you said you were striving for - namely getting a punchier mix.I love the guitar sound! Very hip, yet a little retro. Very much like what I strove for for years I really like the way you processed the lead vocal (though I agree with some others who said it was a little muddy - hard to understand the lyrics). I like the way it moves back & forth ever so slightly and doesn't seem to have a well defined center. I'd love to know how you did that (care to share?) Wouldn't be appropriate for a lot of genres, but I think it works very well here. What I didn't like:I thought the bass was a little too "mushy" sounding and took up too much space in the mix. A slightly "tighter" bass tone would improve the song IMO.I also thought the drums could be a little more up front and a little "brighter" sounding. Really, the drums & guitars are the stars of that song. The mix should reflect that.Conversely, the vocal was a bit too "present". In fact, the whole mix seemed to be boosted around the 2-4kHz range, making it somewhat fatiguing to listen to. I realize that's probably a result of going for that "bolder" sound, but it was a bit too much for me.Overall, nice work! Are you familiar with "Eric Serra"? It reminded me a lot of some of his stuff (I like him, so that's a compliment). Whatever it is you're doing, keep it up!
