LoFi HipHop

Post by prizzi » Mon Sep 25, 2023 10:18 am

Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions on making LoFi HipHop tracks as far as general Taxi guidelines? I wish to submit to listing #S231001WW

I am considering using 3 bar phrasing to keep things moving but I am not sure if there are any other general suggestions. Most YouTube videos I've seen mainly talk about which plugins to use.

1. Read the listing at least twice so you're absolutely 100% clear on what is being asked for.
2. Go to Youtube and search on 'how to make lo fi hip hop' (but don't waste all day).
3. Study all the refs and make notes on what's going on, particularly anything that's common to all the refs.
4. Make a track that does what the refs do without copying them.
5. Don't use loops or sounds that everyone else has access to.
6. Check your track against the refs - does it sound like it could be on the same playlist?
7. Check your track against the listing - does it meet all the criteria?

Thank you. I started by copying the references into my DAW and then trying to replicate the form and development of the track. Thank you for the advice!

Hey Phil!
I feel this listing is a bit different from typical lofi hiphop. The examples all seem to have a lofi feel with the keys sound. The drums all seem to be straight up hiphop, not the usual lofi drum sounds. The bass seems straight ahead and basic. Melody instruments seem like they can range a bit from clean electric guitar to a similar keys sound as used for the main chord progression. I think you're right on with the chord progression movement, the examples all seem to have a new chord on basically every beat.
Hope this helps!
