Mazz and Chuck's Excellent Adventure

Post by crs7string » Mon Feb 20, 2012 10:34 am

This time tomorrow I'll be at the Nashville airport waiting to board a plane to San Francisco for a recording session on Thursday and Friday.

Mazz and I started the process of planning a jazz quartet project in May of last year and it is hard to believe we'll be in the studio this week.

The studio has been booked for several months, we have our bass player and drummer all lined up, and all of the charts for our sessions, ( fourteen in all) have been gone over with the proverbial fine tooth comb.

We are ready to go!!

We will report our progress as the week unfolds. We hope you will find our posts to be informative and interesting.

Chuck

Our sessions are imminent!! As Chuck said, we are recording this week. I wanted to show who our rhythm section is:

The bass player is also the engineer. He is an extremely talented guy who is one of the top call bass players in the Bay Area. He has been musical director for Julio Iglesias as well as playing for many of the top acts that come through town. He also does remote rhythm section work from his studio:

Our drummer is also a top call jazz drummer in the bay area and beyond and has been Boz Scaggs' drummer for his standards projects over the past few years. I love playing with this guy, his swing feel is really deep, I always play better when I play with this guy:

The studio we are recording in is a very nice facility in the South of Market (SOMA) area of San Francisco. They have a large SSL control room and a smaller control room with an API console, which is the the one we will be using. They have 2 Yamaha grand pianos. I chose the newer of the two. The older one was more mellow sounding but the newer one just felt more responsive to my touch. We will all be isolated from each other. The reason that choice was made is because we will be creating alternate mixes for these tracks and we need complete separation. Mic bleed would be preferred for a commercial CD release but this is intended to be for production music, so we are going with separation.

I'm feeling the adrenaline already!! Woo Hoo!!

More to come!
