Middle Eastern Tension ears!

Post by Susanstunes » Thu Apr 11, 2019 2:30 pm

Hi everyone,

This is due Sunday: Here is my track.
https://soundcloud.com/susanhillman/turkish-hideout

TENSION INSTRUMENTAL CUES with some MIDDLE EASTERN flavor are needed by a very successful Exclusive Music Library. These Cues are needed for a specific TV Show, and they need lots of them, so if you’ve got them, don’t be shy about submitting for this!

SUSPENSE MUSIC OF MIDDLE EAST (From 0:00 -1:49)

ARABIAN NIGHTFALL

Please send them Instrumental Cues that create a sense of anticipation. Your pieces can include Electronic or Organic Instrumentation, or a hybrid of both, as long as they have some Middle Eastern flavor. Be sure to structure your Cues around a central melodic theme, while adding and subtracting instrumentation as they progress to create some momentum.

They've told us they "...would love to hear Cues that develop nicely every 4 bars, as long as they don't veer off the theme too much. If you include a "B" Section, don't overdo it!" Keep the changes subtle. Please be sure any Middle Eastern samples/Virtual Instruments you use sound authentic and are well executed.

Quoting the Library's CEO again: "They should also watch to not interfere with narration. Cues that take advantage of low frequencies and percussion to move things along with a good pulse would be optimal."

Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes long and should include a Non-faded, Buttoned/Stinger ending. Do NOT copy the referenced examples in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

TAXI Tip: Please be sure any Middle Eastern samples/Virtual Instruments you use sound authentic and are well executed.

I would love some perspective on this based on the arrangement and mix.
Does it move about every 4 bars... ?
Does it have enough tension...?
Would it fit the listing?

Thanks very much!
Susan

Not my wheelhouse, but gave the track a listen. I didn't get a whole lotta tense-feeling. I would describe it more like 'mysterious underscore'.
The composition was interesting to these Old-Guy ears; but probably subtle enough to allow dialogue over it.
The FX panning early in the piece is very cool, and caught my ears off guard... cool stuff, IMHO.
Hopefully other tension-writers will comment & give you feedback on the details.
HTH; good luck.

Peter, thank you for lending your happy ears. I just wonder if tension and mystery are so close, it's almost negligible. Anyway I am going to see if I can squeeze out some tenseness there! Glad you think it's cool.

Sorry I'm late to the party--has kind of a 'spy movie' feel to it. Definitely fits the listing.

Won't compete with dialogue.

I submitted for this one too, and it got too busy towards the end but that's where it went :(

For what its worth, this is it. I probably blew it by getting to 'big' in the last half but one of the samples got big too.

Sorry had to share!

Mike,
It's not too big at the end I don't think. Has a distinct "Arabian" feel! Nice.... Susan

Thanks for listening!

FYI I downloaded the Duduk patch on Saturday--found a free library instrument from Strezov Sampling.

Made a huge difference.
