If the Jayhawks and Smithereens had a baby and it was raised by STP :)

Vocals are too far back for me. Be confident! Bring them to the front.

I'd also clean up the bass just a little and bring it up in the mix...it's a little muddy and a little low for me (talking 1-2 dB's)

Also...if it was my song I would change the guitar tone slightly. The tone you have is to "bar music/SRV" but the track is not quite that. I would go for a bit more cutting and a little drier tone.

Old-Guy ears & comments from The Peanut Gallery:

ala: stylistically (beat & tempo) remind me of John Cougar Mellancamp -
which, if you wanted to go that way, for a specific COVER listing, you know how to play accordion and could get a right-good candidate, IMHO.

mix: listening on headphones - the middle sounds a bit cluttered - was Jonesin' for it to be thinned out, maybe spread/panned out...
to keep a full sound, but no so much in the same 'zone'. Not sure how you'd accomplish that. Let's see if any others agree, or have an idea of what I mean.

Solid-sounding song - worth dialing it in to be easy on the ears, and one that has you/me reaching for the "Replay" button... to play it again, and again.

I agree with Peter. The keyboard and guitars seem to be competing for the same frequencies, backing vox as well.
IMO there are too many elements in the mix below 100Hz. Put a hi cut filter on the master bus and solo what is going on down there. There is a lot of boom happening- toms, kick, bass [and low end of keyboards and guitars that don't need to be there]. The snare likely has more body down there than is necessary. I think that area and up to around 450 Hz needs some thinning out a bit. All that energy in the low end just causes one to push up the highs which makes the mix fatiguing to listen to.
Just my 2 centers. HTH

Thanks everyone. I've put up a new mixed based on a bunch of these suggestions.

Hi John

I like the song! I didn't hear it before you made the changes, so I was a little confused on peoples comments. Now it makes sense. I can't think of any alas off hand. It must be in a class of it's own :) Nice job!

Nice mix.

These are all just my opinion so take them with a grain of salt:

Bass still seems a little muddy and low (volume) for my ears. The ride bell is peaking out a bit too much as well. Also, the guitar tone still isn't matching the track for me.
