Mixing/Mastering Video Tuition?
Hi All,
Like everyone else, I'd like to get better/learn more about mixing and mastering within the home studio (computer-based) environment. Has anyone tried any on-line tuition videos? I know there's free stuff on Youtube (of varying quality), but I'm willing to shell-out if needed for a good product. However, I'd prefer something generic rather than targetted at one specific DAW. So, any good reports?
Cheers,
Graham (UK)
P.S. Although there are some good books (e.g. Mike Senior's book on Mixing, which I own and have read avidly). I fancied watching some actual practitioners in action. Tuition videos seems a better option than making tea in a studio, but if that's what it takes .....

Re: Mixing/Mastering Video Tuition?
Videos are certainly educational and it isalways nice to see other's approach.
You could take a look at:
http://www.groove3.com has some good full mixing walk-throughs of songs in various genres by Kenny Gioia and Tony Sheppard. (rock, metal, electronic)
http://www.audioschoolonline.com has videos by Ken Lewis (mostly pop and urban)
I've seen those personally and can recommend them.
They focus mostly on the thought process rather than any specific plug-in or DAW. Sometimes they'll even give you the session files so you can follow along or try things out on your own.
Slate Digital is coming out soon with some walk-throughs from Chris Lord-Alge which should be exciting. This will be at http://www.audiolegends.com
http://www.pensadosplace.tv has great short in-the-lair videos of specific techniques (as well as longer interviews).
http://www.mixwiththemasters.com apparently has videos up now from some top engineers, but I haven't personally seen these.

Thanks for those suggestions. I'll be sure to check them all out.
I just wondered if anyone had watched or bought any such products and could recommend them.
I'm pretty sure it won't be long before I'm reminded thats its the 'ears not the gear', but I'm trying to get mine calibrated!
Thanks again,
Graham.

Re: Mixing/Mastering Video Tuition?
Puremix.net has been the best for me so far. Fab Dupont runs it and is excellent at explaining the process and demystifying any jargon. I use Groove3 also and that's good for learning software and such. I have used other sites in the past....Puremix and groove3 have been the best. Solid advice...no BS...well laid out. The Andrew Schepps mix series was worth the price alone...then the mixing Robbie Williams feature was priceless...and then all of the vids by Fab and others....pretty good stuff. You won't be disappointed.

Re: Mixing/Mastering Video Tuition?
There are LOTS of free stuffs out there.
Just search specific terms on youtube, like "time warping Cubase 7.0" or something.
I would say do not pay a dime for anything that teaches you how to use a DAW unless it is for someone in person in your studio teaching you your specific program.
Too much good free stuff out there to have to pay for a generic video.

Re: Mixing/Mastering Video Tuition?
Thanks Doug and Mikey,
I have seen a lot of free stuff Mikey, but its a bit hit and miss for me. There's probably everything I could ever need, but wading through the 'not so good' stuff put up by self-proclaimed 'master mixers' can be time-consuming. I guess sticking to well-known names is most reliable. I'll certainly follow some of your links Doug and see what pops up.
In the mean time, I found The Recording Revolution, http://therecordingrevolution.com/
From what I've seen when I've dipped in, its good stuff, and although there's a lot of background basics that we all ought to know already, there's also a few 'ahah's' for me. Unfortunately, its what I call a 'seedcorn setup', where the trail of nibbles always leads to 'for just another $xx you can get.....'. By the way, I'm certainly not being negative about their offerings, its just business and why would you want to give away your hard work for nothing? After all, we're all here at Taxi trying to find a way to get paid for our work. I'm just trying to home in on good tuition, and if this material is the best, then I'd be willing to pay if that's what it takes. However, if there's better stuff for less $$ then I'd be happier with that. That's business too!
Thanks,
Graham.

+1 great stuff. Fab explains well and isn't afraid to gain match plugins active and bypassed which I can say is a general fault with Universal Audio demos of their plugins and also in the Steve Slate stuff. Especially Slate does not try to gain match his plugs on and off. Result? Louder always sounds better - good way to sell gear.dougstronach wrote:www.Puremix.net

and all the other stuff Scott mentioned. Lots of good stuff.

As always Andy, very useful advice and a little nugget of gold thrown in for good measure.
I'll be heading straight over to Puremix. Huge thanks for that.
Cheers,
Graham.

One of the reasons I don't own any Slate stuff, though I do have some freebie preamp thing I've never used. Their drum replacement plug is pretty good, but I think it defaults to their sample sets.andygabrys wrote: Fab explains well and isn't afraid to gain match plugins active and bypassed which I can say is a general fault with Universal Audio demos of their plugins and also in the Steve Slate stuff.
