Muscle Shoals the Movie

From time to time I may scratch an itch to ramble on about things that have been on my mind.
You know the stuff I mean......The stuff that will get buried because day to day life gets in front of it.
There is a movie playing in theatre's called "Muscle Shoals" and I think every Taxi member should see it.
I rented it online through my VUDU acct. and watched it twice Last night and Tonight.
What really resonates to me about this film is how the music was made and the people that made it.
Ordinary folks like you and me recording in sessions with lots of players.
Don't get me wrong loops and samples are great fun to work with and virtual instruments are reaching stellar heights.
With the new tools available and the lower costs for recording I wonder if more of us shouldn't be thinking in an old school way about recording.
Maybe I'm dreaming but what a dream........
Musicians getting paid a fair day's wage to be on other peoples records,
Not following trends but setting them.
Creating something that will outlast the next fashion cycle.

Howdy. Thanks for the movie recommendation; will act upon it a.s.a.p...provided my local library has it.

Under a different board index, posted some examples of live recording "old-school" style...that gets my motor going.
Y'all may already have seen the TV show of Daryl Hall...Live From Daryl's House. That room and all the guests he gets to come and jam with his road band...just stellar, and great examples of how to play and leave space.

Yes I have seen 'Live fro Daryl's house' I wish there were more days in the week because there is so much out there.

Peter, I ran across that Todd Rundgren video awhile ago. Loved it. What a cool place. We went to see him perform about a month ago (again). He's great! I have actually never seen the Daryl Hall show. One of my guitar students recently mentioned it to me. I need to find it.

MJ, I performed with my wife in a midi based duo for many years. She never understood when I talked about "midi-guilt". I could never quite get over it. It's great to have the tools and everything, but I grew up playing in real bands and there is something huge missing when other musicians are not present. I have to see the Muscle Shoals movie.

All that said, in my studio, on basically no budget, when I want to record a number of songs each week, I use whatever I need to get the job done. Something about performing though, always seemed a bigger stretch for me to not be playing with real musicians.

I agree...tough to beat real musicians playing real instruments...live and together.
Gone...mostly...are the days of Hitsville U.S.A.
If you have not seen it yet, get the DVD documentary (rock-u-mentary) "Standing In The Shadows of Motown".

I'd not paid any mind to Todd since way back in the days of NAZZ!! Yikes... His voice has changed considerably since then.
He was a boy then; now he sings like a man.

You know I was thinking that many of the reference tracks for listings are from artists who have been tracking the old fashioned way.
Mumford and Sons,
Arcade Fire,
The Black Keys,
Just to name a few.
