Re: Muse Releases Receptor 2
After a little digging, the only two drawbacks I've found so far (vs using a PC slave) are that in it's current incarnation Receptor 2 is limited to 4GB RAM (OS limitation), although 4 Gigs goes a lot further when you don't have your typical bloated OS, and the one Mojo already mentioned, namely that Muse has to "receptorize" the plugins and they seem to be rather slow doing so.
E.g., while Omnisphere seems to run in Receptor, there seems to be an annoying graphics bug that makes tweaking sounds difficult which they haven't been able to fix yet (and Omnisphere is not exactly new software). Another example is that they just now seem to have ironed out Komplete 6 bugs, and of course NI has already come out with Komplete 7.
This latter issue is one worth pondering, it may be less of an issue for those that would use Receptor as an expansion of their DAW as we could always run the latest greatest Plugins in the DAW itself and use Receptor for the older "workhorse VI's". But for live performance it would be a real drag to have to wait for a year after, say, Ivory 2 comes out until you can use it on Receptor.
This seems to be the main complaint in the Receptor user community.

Hmm, looks good for live use, for sure. The compact rack size is certainly an advantage there. But am I the only one who thinks that this looks kind of old tech for studio use? I mean it's basically a dsp with 750gigs? 4ram? You could get a bigger second computer for a third of the price of Receptor and run it wireless?

I think it's the Linux based os that makes huge amounts of ram not as necessary as a regular pc. In order to do what this does with Ethernet on my win 7 slave, I need 2 separate applications.
I wouldn't attempt audio and midi over wireless!! There is wireless midi out there but realtime audio? Don't think so!

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

No, this is something I would consider. Definitely great to free more ressources on the computer. I try to do that all the time, and this is a box that definitely could make that more simple. I'm just not sold on the status of the technology of this company, that's all. But then again, it's tested and tried, and that counts a lot when you are to depend on gear in a live situation..

Precisely the point. The Receptor was designed for giggers from the get-go.

I like it, it's a nasty improvement over the old one. The only drawback to me is still the singe set of stereo outputs. In a gig situation for myself, I'd rather send the stuff to an outboard mixer, but that might be only my particular application that it doesn't work for. I always want a separate line out or two, as well as the stereo pair. Most of my gigs include me playing let hand bass, and I always need to have that separated from the mix, especially when there are both monitor and front of house rigs.mojobone wrote:Precisely the point. It sure looks fast, and that to me is always going to be a reason to use it over a computer for live stuff. So maybe having 2 makes $en$e.

Re: Muse Releases Receptor 2
Steve,
Do you run stereo live? I've never found that to be very effective myself. If you ran mono you could just pan the bass to one side and everything else to the other.
I actually think this would be great for studio work due to the Ethernet connection. I don't need an extensive live sound palette since I gig as little as possible.
Turns out they are in Menlo Park which is about 30 minutes from my house. I may schedule a demo at their facility. If I do, I'll write a report.

Yes I run in stereo as often as I can. I play live so seldom that I want my experience to be as AWESOME as I can make it. I always bring my own PA, w a sub 'cause I 'd rather play loud... you know kinda like me in general.mazz wrote:Steve,

Re: Muse Releases Receptor 2
Steve, given that it also has an ADAT digital output, something like this http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... CDwQ8wIwAg# would be a lot cheaper than buying two Receptors. Assuming the 8 ADAT outs can be addressed individually from within Receptor (which one would certainly hope for) this would give you 10 analog outs to work with, which should be plenty even if you want to do a live surround sound extravaganza!sgs4u wrote: I like it, it's a nasty improvement over the old one. Re: Muse Releases Receptor 2
I had thought about that Behringer box but I couldn't remember if it did d/a conversion, which it does! That would be a good add on for live gigging!
Just need to figure out when I can make time to do a trip to Menlo Park
