I don't think it has anything to do with being a musician (other than having a way to mass communicate the experience).Most people aren't musicians, but most people intake some kind of substances. And the ones who don't get a similar effect from their belief system. Its part of being human, for better or worse.

The link between drugs and music is nothing more than a cliche.BTW I could never pass up using a good cliche when writing music (or passing on a good cliche to the musician on my right ).... Geo

I think the cliche started because musicians were more likely to be scrutizined and criticized by the public. I also think artist types tend toward empathy (or sympathy) and spend more time pondering or analyzing emotions. Despite lots of evidence, being in touch with your feelings doesn't necessarily equate to contentment. Hence the drugs to escape the feelings.
