[SOLVED] Need a Synth Patch ID

Post by Razor7Music » Wed Dec 11, 2019 2:18 pm

Hello--

Cage the Elephant has a track out now that I'd like to ID the New Wave sounding keyboard patch that's used throughout the track.

The song is https://youtu.be/2gR9LAI6rZQ.

Thanks!

Seems to be playing a Korg Kronos in the video which has sounds from a lot of their classic synths built in but also a bunch of pianos.

It reminds me of the sound on the intro to Ashes to Ashes which is a piano sound run through a flanger and distortion.

Cool, thanks
If I had to make a wish it would be a rompler VST/AU that has got all synth sounds sorted by the song they're used in (with constant updates). :D
At least from my experience finding sounds similar to what is being used in the reference tracks is one of the most time-consuming things.
Cheers,
Matt

Easier to Google these things and see what comes up, if it's well known enough someone may well ahve posted about it already. Other than that it's often easy enough to get close if you understand the basics of creating synth patches

No clue on the specific sound, though I imagine quite a few vintage synth emulations could make it. It sounds like it is probably a fairly common lead sound with a significant pitch "wobble", probably from an early (immediate?) LFO onset with fairly heavy depth.

If I were trying to emulate a specific sound, or get pretty closely into the ballpark, I'd probably start somewhere like Arturia's Analog Lab 4, which includes all their V Collection 7 synths plus Pigments under the hood with cut down programmability (and can also stack 2 synths), using their browser to narrow down ranges of sounds by characteristics, then just try sounds out to get something close and tweak from there, if needed. Other synths (e.g. from NI) have similar browsing possibilities, but the nice thing about Analog Lab is combining the various synth engines, so you don't have to know ahead of time whether you're talking a DX-7, a Prophet (5 or VS), a Jupiter 8, a Casio CZ, or whatever.
