Need Feedback on Reggae track (so far)

Post by BradleyHagen » Mon May 06, 2024 4:41 pm

Hey Folks!
So, I am attempting a track for a Jamaican Dub instrumental brief on here, and I just don't know what to do with it, how to move forward, etc etc. The truth is that besides playing bass in a a couple of reggae bands once upon a time, I don't know jack about this genre, much less how to find and use the right sounds, and produce it. I am sure that this example is pretty much crap, but I am determined to use the expertise on this forum to learn how to expand into other genres! Brutal and honest feedback is more than welcome on this, so please don't hold back!

LISTING:
Lots of JAMAICAN DUB INSTRUMENTALS and/or INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a Great Music Licensing Company with lots of Film and TV placements.

This Library is looking for several Instrumentals (and/or Cues) in the general stylistic ballpark of the following references:

"Storming the Death Star" by Roots Radics

"King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" by Augustus Pablo

"Cry Of The Werewolf" by Scientist

Although some of the references have vocals, please submit instrumentals only.

Please submit Jamaican Dub Instrumentals (and/or Cues) that capture the sound and vibe of the references, and other songs that could be on a playlist with them! Your submissions should have laid-back grooves, solid arrangements, and tasteful uses of effects such as spring reverb and tape delay. Instrumentation that fits in the general stylistic ballpark of the references will work best. Please be sure that all virtual instruments or samples you use are high-quality and genre-appropriate.

Your submissions should be roughly 1.5 minutes long for Cues, and about 2 to 4 minutes long for Instrumentals, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned endings will work best. Please do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so please be sure the Instrumentals and/or Cues you pitch for this opportunity are NOT already signed with any other Companies or Catalogs. Any sync fees will be split 50/50 with the Company. You'll get 100% of the Writer's share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher's share. You must own or control your Masters and Copyright to submit. Please submit as many Instrumentals and/or Cues as you'd like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Sunday, May 19th, 2024. TAXI # S240519DB

Nice one! I don't know a lot about dub but the eighth note chord stabs at the top take it more into ska world for me, I'd be curious to hear chord stabs on 2 and 4. Also putting something through an analog delay and manually controlling the feed back for trippy old school mayhem would give it a more authentic flair. Also lofi tape/vinyl fx would be your friends.
My totally suspect 2c...
