New track, would like comments

Post by WaddyP » Fri May 02, 2014 10:49 am

I decided to try writing in a new genre of Drum & Bass. Could you all take a listen and let me know what you think. Any comments would be helpful, if I got the genre correct, mix, composition, etc. Thanks

Hey Waddy -- I'm not familiar with, and hadn't heard of, the genre of Drum & Bass. So if that genre has specific traditions and requirements, my comments may not be relevant. But here are some impressions:

The first 30 seconds consists of, for lack of a better description, several false starts before the basic groove is established. Again, without knowing the genre, 30 seconds of starting, stopping, and hinting of something to come seems like a long time and may weaken the overall energy of the piece.

Once you have the groove going for awhile, it stops again and once more loses propulsion and energy. Also, there's a section where the percussion drops out, adding to the sense that the piece never is given a chance to get going. And finally, at around 1:48, the "melody" deviates from the pattern and begins what sounds like improvising. I think if you're going to do that, it needs to be more consistently in the groove and more highly energized. It seems a bit tentative and meandering.

I don't know if the genre typically employs a building of intensity over time, but you might consider changing or adding to the percussion track as the piece moves along so there's a sense of progression and dynamic build.

Hope that helps. And again, if I don't know what I'm talking about (it's been known to happen), just ignore any or all of these comments.

Richard

Hello dear Waddy,

I do not know if you are a Man or a Woman ! Forgive me, I am French, not totally acquainted with Names in the English language.
I know that 'Wade" is a masculine Name ...
But I shall address you as a she for now. :) ;)

Anyway, let us have a listen to : "Moonscapes"

Woah, this is ... Avant Garde, at first !! I like it.
And rather Electronica after that, with many Changes.
So therefore it could be : Skrillex
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrillex
At 0.30 you are introducing the main feel of the Piece, that one that will roll on till the end.
Nice break at 1.09

After that it is different. At 1.18 the many Changes are taking place no longer. We are listening to a very pleasant long Phrase till the end.

Interesting.

I see this as a Musical Composition for TV Programs for or with or about Teen Agers.

You made many Edit Points, so it is quite workable indeed, from the point of view of Supervisors !
It might be advantageous to submit it to a Library.

hey Waddy,

I only had a cursory listen, but I agree with Richard that it was a little abstract getting to the beat.

this list of D'n'B classics might give you a couple ideas: http://www.musicradar.com/us/news/tech/ ... -224277/20

there are some tracks on there that exhibit what I would consider "classic D'n'B trademarks" (keeping in mind that I don't create this kinda thing all the time) - most of which is the fast breakbeat.

when you are writing a track that is supposed to be D'n'B you have to keep in mind that they listing may or may not be looking for an "artist" cut off an album, that might be sort of abstract with a lot of really cinematic moments but a lack of the classic hyper-break-beat. The listing might be looking for a recognizable 2 minute example of what Drum and bass is to the relative lay person.

EDIT: relistened. Okay its closer than my first listen. I think the things that would help it is some kind of rhythm that continues after the first tease of the beat until the beat returns in the first third. And I would listen to the tunes in that list above and check out the processing on the beats themselves, and the general level of the beats compared to the other instrumentation. I think you could make your drums louder and nastier, and perhaps have several layers in there. And melodically, I would keep it really simple and keep things building with layers of other timbres reinforcing whatever melody you have, or layers of texture playing the chords in the background.

Thanks for the comments. Andy, thanks for the reference, I will check it out. I have never written this style before, so I am a noob at it. There was a listing looking for it that passed, but I thought I should give it a try and step out of my comfort zone to expand my horizons so to speak. Thanks again to all comments.

Thanks for listening and your comments Hector, I appreciate your time and expertise. I am a guy, no worries. Waddy P is kind of ambiguous, it's a nickname, my real name is Warren Paradise. This is a new style and something I am doing to expand my scope. My kid is very versed in all the modern genres and said it basically fits. I was concerned that repeating the main melody throughout would get very boring of which my daughter agreed, so that is why I had a change up there. I guess the next time there is a listing for this style I will give it a shot. Thanks again.

Ah dear Waddy,

I love : "Tuvan Day Gone" It is brilliant ! What a Genial Musical idea, the Ethnic Bizzaro !! :) ;) :D Ah yes indeed.
http://soundcloud.com/waddyp/tuvan-day-gone

This is my own attempt, not quite as Bizzare, but Ethnic yes, (love anything Bizarre when it is not dark ... and Ethnic, big time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGjx4sd5lyo

This is another Bizzare directly from France :

Enjoy ! This is great fun. (same Video, same Song, recorded 3 x times as Bizzare)

Gosh, I am so grateful that you have introduced TAXI to a new Genre ! We are looking for this : inventive new Genres !

On a rather more serious note, this is what I understand as Avant Garde :

Very close to my Musical Heart, yes.
