Old Crooked Oak ©2010 Greg Shields/Robert George

I can see it on the hillside, in a twisted silhouette
Branches dancin’ in the night breeze, roots along the riverbed
And its bark is worn and battered, from the lightnin’, hail and wind
But it breaks the weather’s spirit, when that tree begins to bend

And it’s reachin’ for the sky
While it’s tied down to the earth
As if something way up high
Is what living life is worth
Someday it may disappear
Into ashes and smoke
Till then nothing perseveres
Like the old crooked oak

My daddy used to bring me here, and in some ways he still does
And he’d say the winds of fortune, do their part in shaping us
If a man is soft and sheltered, he might grow up straight and tall
But it only takes the slightest storm wind, for a man like that to fall

But it’s reachin’ for the sky
While it’s tied down to the earth
As if something way up high
Is what living life is worth
Someday it may disappear
Into ashes and smoke
Till then nothing perseveres
Like the old crooked oak

Daddy’s hands were tough as leather
And his face was rough and weathered
From the lessons that he learned and lived for me
Now I come here to be near him
And I swear that I can hear him
On the wind that’s whisp’ring in the tree

And it’s reachin’ for the sky
While it’s tied down to the earth
As if something way up high
Is what living life is worth
Someday we all disappear
Into ashes and smoke
Till then I will persevere
Like the old crooked oak

Till then I will persevere
Like the old crooked oak…
