On-line submission MP3 Broadcast Quality?

Post by cardell » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:36 pm

In the past I've submitted songs to Taxi on a CD through the post but from now on I intend to submit my music on-line. In listings where broadcast quality is required and your online (MP3) submission gets forwarded, is your Wave file version later requested by the company placing the listing? If so, how do you generally send it to them? Thanks, Stuart

Hi Stuart,If your music gets forwarded and the company is interested and signs your music, they will let you know the delivery details at that time. From my experience, some companies prefer a CD, some have FTP sites where you upload your music (this is becoming more common). Some want 16 bit 44.1 kHz sample rate, some want 48K sample rate. Most want WAV files but I've had libraries request AIFF files too.If you don't already know, now's a good time to learn how to generate various types of audio files and sample rates if necessary. There's plenty of inexpensive software out there that you can use to accomplish this, and your DAW may already have the capabilities. Also, you should get familiar with the FTP process as it will probably be getting more and more common as time goes on. Again, there's inexpensive and even free FTP client software available that makes this process relatively painless. Learn and practice these procedures, there's nothing worse than having to get something in when there's a time crunch and not knowing how to upload to an FTP site. Trust me!Good luck!!Mazz

I upload to a couple of libraries via FTP through my wireless system several times a month. Haven't had any problems.

It's possible that some libraries or other public Wifi spots may have large-file protocols like FTP turned off to keep folks from chewing up bandwidth. However, most seem to be figuring out that if they block FTP, folks will just use HTTP to send the same file, which increases the byte count by more than double. Many are starting to open up FTP access these days.

They will give you specific instructions on what form they would like the music in, and how they would like it delivered. Usually it's send the contract and a CD, or send the contract and upload the wav, using FTP, to their server. FTP is pretty simple to use.If it's a song you will likely be asked to also provide the bedtrack (just mute the vocals and run it off), or perhaps a 'tv mix' which is everything but the lead vocal.
