Open The Sky - "Owl City" Mix (Electronic Drums)

Post by jefflaplante » Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:02 pm

OK. I just fiished the new mix of "Open The Sky", which I posted up on here last week. It now has electronic drums and just a touch of pitch correction /auto tune for that modern twist. I would love to hear your thoughts. The old one is still up on my page if you want to compare and contrast.

The new mix is called "Open The Sky - (Owl Mix)" and you can hear it on my TAXI page:

Open the Sky

VERSE 1
Sad hours always last the longest
And time begins to melt
You lose the will to breathe the heavy air
You find it hard to find yourself

CHORUS
We can open the sky tonight
The only place to be is here with me
If you open your mind tonight
I will take you miles from everything you hate

VERSE 2
When it feels like weeks since you’ve seen the sun
And your only break is sleep
When hope has turned its back on you
You can see your skin start to age

CHORUS
We can open the sky tonight
The only place to be is here with me
If you open your eyes tonight
I can take you miles from everything you hate

BRIDGE
When you wish all your days away
You find yourself turning grey
Lets go. It’s time to take a ride

CHORUS
We can open the sky tonight
The only place to be is with you and me
If you open your eyes tonight
I can take you miles from everything you hate

Hey Jeff and Brother. This is one of the best vocal takes I've heard from you guys, and they're usually pretty good. The electronic drums are kinda cool, and the mix is good. The only nit is with the pitch correction thang. If you don't go all the way with it as an effect, than it just sounds like pitch correction done badly. Others will be right behind to disagree, and probably should, that's what makes this a damn great country, but that's my take on it.
Good job I think
Cheers

Like this version a lot better than the 1st. I would love to hear a lot less kick drums in the intro. It will make the part "you lose the will to breathe..." stand out a lot more when the beat comes in(I think it shud stand out cause its great!). Im not too fond of your top line in the chorus but thats just me.

I wish I had a voice like yours...oh sorry  , I was just thinking out loud.

God bless and all the best! :)

Jeff, I'm curious what your goal for this cut is? I'd like to give some feedback but I'm not too sure what would be the best direction unless I knew the application, I missed the first cuts on this one...

Cheers!

WTA,
Our goals for our songs are film/tv placements or pithcing to other artists. We want to be career songwriters, but who doesn't? Thanks for listening!

Sounds good to me .. but I don't have great ears for mix issues.

Really like your hook lyric! Rest of lyric seems good too.

Like the melody, good chorus lift.

Couldn't quite make out the words here:
1. last word of verse2
2. The only place to be? is you with me ... is that right?

Really nice song. Good singing.

Dean,

I just posted the lyrics. You were close. It is: The only place to be is here with me.

Thanks Jeff, but I wasn't trying to get you to post the lyric .. I just wanted to give you feedback, in case you agreed and wanted to re-sing some parts to make the words more clear for all listeners.

Well done.......like the harmonies in the chorus and the panning of the harmonies...very nicely done........here's my feeling to get this to cut it through a screen-er........forget the drum intro....start with the soft vox and by the 30 sec mark you will be into the chorus...that's what I see that can give at that little extra....most songs like this need to start giving it at the 30 sec mark.....my thoughts
Regards,
Dick

Thanks slowdance...I am going to try to see what I can do about shortening the intro and at least losing the drum beat in the intro.

Dean, sorry for the mix up. I know what you meant now...if you couldn't tell what was being said, probably others will have the same problem when hearing the song. Thanks.

So the general consensus here is that the new electronic version is better, right?
