ORCHESTRAL-Based DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTAL CUE

Post by DouglasKnight » Fri Jan 21, 2022 7:56 pm

Hey folks,

This is my first attempt at a dramedy cue so would love any feedback as a fit for a listing below: https://www.taxi.com/members/Gjdf7sdFR5 ... subterfuge

Thanks
Doug

ORCHESTRAL-Based DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a very successful Music Licensing Company that lands placements on hundreds of shows on Major Networks every year with distribution in North America and Europe!

This Company is on the hunt for Instrumental Cues in the general stylistic ballpark of the following references:

"Take A Number" by Bleeding Fingers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIzl9lZVgyA

"Frenemy of the People" by Bleeding Fingers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WME00QPm3Yc

Please submit top-notch Dramedy Instrumental Cues that could help establish a playful, dramatic mood in Reality TV scenes. Craft your Cues around a singular motif, and create a sense of forward momentum and dynamics by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. This Library is open to hearing lighter, quirkier pieces as well as slightly darker Cues – check out the references to hear what we mean. A range of instrumentation could work for this request as long as Orchestral elements remain a focal component in your arrangements. Please be sure that your production and any virtual instrumentation you use are high-quality, modern, and fresh.

I think you should make your orchestral instruments much more prevalent, the 2 references are in fact very good examples of that. In your piece, it is the piano that drives and not the orchestra, which must, as the listing also says, be the focal component

Excellent suggestion, thank you very much. I've lowered the piano a bit in the mix and replaced the piano bass part with tuba in the second half, so hopefully that's an improvement? Here's a link to the updated track: https://www.taxi.com/members/Gjdf7sdFR ... ubterfuge

Thanks again,
Doug

My pleasure! I still think the piano in the 1st section is too prominent. If I were you, I would probably have it double the pizz strings, and let the melody being taken over by clarinet/bassoon. Also, you have the same melodic figure in all the sections, albeit played by different instruments, might be worth considering adding a countermelody? I did hear some celli playing long notes, at some point

I really like this! I think it may be a little too "fenced in", in other words, not as flexible as other cues of that type, but definitely usable given a situation that calls for it.

Okay, I've replaced the piano with Flute and Bassoon for the first half, hopefully this works? Here's the updated track: https://www.taxi.com/members/Gjdf7sdFR5 ... subterfuge

Thanks again for your help with this!

It certainly sounds more orchestral than before (might argue that piano too is an orchestral instrument :) ), and a bit less of a butter stick waveform, too, great! And sorry for being very nitpicky!

It may be great as is, but if it was me, I'd look for a couple of little ways to go more quirky/sound design-y with it, perhaps especially at the beginning to grab attention. Like they did with the rattly-scrapey thing in the initial seconds of the first ref.

Good luck with it, either way!
