Re: Orchestral Composers: Slave computer discussion............
Brian,
I'm not sure carillon ships PC's to the US anymore.
My advice to anyone wishing to purchase a PC slave is to do it with one of the companies
that builds to order. Most of them will thoroughly test the PC before shipping it out
and you can be sure that what you're getting is truly plug and play! Audio is a very strange beast!!
I did look into building an audio PC myself and even though I've built one in the past, I still went to
Carillon just for the peace of mind AND the guarantee.
As far as specs go, get the fastest and ram maxed machine you can afford-especially if you plan to run
LASS fully as I always do. My 24 gigs are more than enough, but I would not go under 16 gigs.
I agree with matto. mazz and all others who caution you into not spending yourself to death. I'm a firm
believer into upgrading only when there's cash coming in and I count my blessings for being able to get
whatever I want. I upgrade only when my previous investment (whether hardware or software) has been recouped.

Re: Orchestral Composers: Slave computer discussion............
Now Guys, I am wondering if you realize what you are doing to people like me! the only thing I ever wanted to do was to create a few hard to classify bunch of tunes and I was very close to achieve that, till I met you lot! now I do not know were to turn anymore.
There is alway new gear to look up, new computer systems that could be useful, there is no end to it, as Matto said, I am spending more time trying to figure out how something works then doing anything else . Lately, after full acclaims from every corner as the thing to have, I got the full Lass library It is so complicate that looks like I will be spending the next 10 years learning how to use it!
GIVE ME A BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!

Re: Orchestral Composers: Slave computer discussion............
Yes, thanks! I'm not yet convinced that I need this slave machine, but I want to go through the motions and get a firm number. That way I know what's coming next. It's impossible to justify it from a business perspective right now. I just recently got Omnisphere and Stylus and told myself that I wasn't getting anything new until I had those completely dialed in. And I'm still getting better with the Platinum Orchestra each time I use it. So I agree.matto wrote:Yeah...the spending can quickly become a bottomless pit...I've always had a rule that the spending has to be in some vaguely healthy correlation (fusilierb wrote:I obviously only want to spend what is absolutely necessary as the computer and LASS at the prices I'm currently seeing is hard to really justify in my current level of professional success.) with the compositional output and ultimately, income. Otherwise what you are really talking about is a VERY expensive hobby. Nothing wrong with that if you've got the cash to burn, but it's not the same thing as running a business.
That's not to say you can't invest a considerable sum of money to get yourself up to speed with a competitive system, but after that IMHO the focus has to be on making that investment back. Cause there is always more stuff to buy...but if you spend all your time buying and breaking in new equipment you never have time to actually master any of it. And then your stuff sounds no better than if you were using less than "state of the art" stuff.
I know I've said this (too?) many times, but the years I spent trying to coax the best possible results from inferior sound sources were probably the most valuable learning experience. I'm still benefiting from it now, cause making inferior sounds sound good and making good sounds sound great is really the same process...
So don't go overboard spending...I've been getting by just fine with one computer for years; in fact I've only had the slave since earlier this year...and that's the first time I've ever run more than one computer...
But... if I want to go any further than what I'm using now, I'm afraid another machine is going to have to come. Some sort of string library is next on the list and they all require this extra leap. So I'll get my quote today and then I know what I'm up against will take it from there.
Thanks everyone for all the good advice!!!

It's comments like these that make my taxi membership and participation on this board so worth every damn penny. Thanks Matto. I fall so easy to the GAS game that I forget to step back and truly understand what I have available to me right now.matto wrote:...the years I spent trying to coax the best possible results from inferior sound sources were probably the most valuable learning experience. These words are going to be plastered at my workstation. My only objective this summer is to take your advice to heart and make the best sounding recordings I can make with my current rig. Matto, I owe you a beer.

Re: Orchestral Composers: Slave computer discussion............
I just got my quote. I have to admit, it's a pretty ass kicking machine:
"Quote"
Well here is what I would recommend. I went with a 1366 based system for you because it will be more than fast enough for what you want to do… maybe even faster than the new Sandy Bridge systems, and because until the DDR3 8GB non-ecc modules hit the market, the most memory you can physically fit into an 1155 based system is 16GB. This system below has 24GB, a super-fast Quad Core processor, and the option to upgrade to the 6 Core processor if you ever feel like you need it.
Custom CGR 2v4 Intel 1366
Price $2100.00
Configuration:
4 Space Rack Mount Case with all quiet cooling
600Watt ATX 12v Power Supply
CGR Approved x58chipset based motherboard
Intel i7 950, 3.06Ghgz Processor
24GB DDR3 1333mhz Memory (Triple Channel)
ATI RADEON HD5450 Dual Head Video Card 1GB memory
Lightscribe DVD Burner
750GB SATA II 6GB/s 7200rpm 64mb Cache Drive for Operating System
1TB SATA II 6GB/s 7200rpm 64mb Cache Drive for Libraries
8x SATA 3GB/s connectors
2x SATA 6GB/s connectors
6 x USB 2.0
2 x Firewire 400
2 x USB 3.0
2 x eSATA connectors
2x PCIe 16x slots
2 x PCIe 8x slots
2 x PCIe 1x slots
1 x PCI 32bit slot
1 x 1000Mbps Ethernet Connector
Windows 7 x64 Professional SP1
Acronis Home 2011
Nero 9 CD burning
System Restore Disk
Fully Tweaked for part use as VSL Pro Slave
1 Year Part and Labor Warranty with lifetime support (3 year warranty with free shipping for repairs is $395.00).
"end quote"
I should add that this about 900 bucks cheaper than a comparable vision Daw and is actually specked out more than what they are offering in many areas. Hmmm....

That's a good price for something like this with 24G of RAM. You'll just need to add VEPro and whatever samples you need to load up.
Nice!
