This is probably bad advice, but just to put it out there, I've been using Pro Tools for several years now, and have always done upgrades without wiping everything clean before (including going up to 10.5.5 and to PT 8 a few days ago). In my case, I've never had any problems spring from doing that...I may just be lucky, so it's probably better to follow everyone else's advice, but the only problems I've ever really had have come down to plugin incompatibility or PT-current system incompatibility (when I first upgraded to Leopard there were definitely issues, but that was just Leopard).Anyway, Pro Tools 8 is running great so far and I highly recommend it!D

Thanks Chuck, that's good stuff. And exactly what I do. Samples on a different drive. Raags, you don't need to worry about VSTs. PT on a Mac can't use them anyway (unless you've got a wrapper, which I hear is a little flakey). All the PT plugs run as RTAS instruments. Daniel, yeah, when I'm doing small updates, that's what I do too. But I find my system drive gets enough crap on it that it begins to bog down a little. So, I use major updates (in this case, Tiger to Leopard, and PT7 to 8) to build an entirely new drive. It cleans out all the old dead stuff, and usually speeds things up. I did basically just copy my Plug-Ins folder from one system to the other, but I'd done some homework on which plugs were going to have issues with Leopard and upgraded those already. (Waves to 6.0 was the biggie.)Raags, for backup, I just use a function in PT call Save Copy In. It collects all the files the session uses and copies them and the session into one neat folder on whatever drive you specify. Along with Selecting and Removing Unused Regions, it's how I clean up sessions that have a bunch of unused takes in them as well. If I want a backup of my system drive I've used Super Duper! in the past, though Leopard's Time Machine backup is pretty slick. I'll probably do that with this one.

I'm just now cleaning out some old songs I've finished in the last year, archiving the copies in external hard drives. But I'd like to clean up and remove all the takes I'm not using first so I'll try your suggestion about Unused Regions.Here's a related question. I start a song with one name and then change the title. If I Save Copy As, it creates a new file. How do I delete old PT session files. I was going to go into My Computer and delete them, but is there a better way inside PT?Thanks for sharing info stick!

I was familiar with PT needing RTAS (and not VSTs), though I'd wondered about those flakey "wrappers". Haven't ventured there yet.I've used Select and Remove Unused Regions-- it's a great feature. I just have to be careful because sometimes I'll have different mixes with different audio tracks recorded, and I can't always "delete unused tracks from the HD", as they are being used by another PT session in that folder. Guess all the required thinking keeps my noggin more youthful.
