Logic question...

Post by slideboardouts » Wed Aug 20, 2008 11:26 am

I recently bought Logic Express 8. I like it a lot...very nice to work in for the most part and I've been able to jump right in and start recording without too much of a learning curve. But, and I know this sounds stupid, I can't figure out how to export my whole song/project as a WAV file. I can get individual tracks, but not the whole song.I've never had a problem figuring this out with any other DAW I use. I feel dumb even asking such a question but I can't find it in the help files and its starting to get frustrating.Thanks,-Steve

Hi Steve, I'm not sure I understand your situation but it sounds to me like you need to make a stereo bounce of your mix. If so, look in the upper right hand area of your arrange page and you'll see an icon labeled 'Bounce'. Click on that and you'll get a dialogue window where you can select the audio file type, aiff, wav or mp3 and the bit depth etc. You also select the length of the bounce so you'll need to enter the start and end points of your song, and you can select whether or not you want to dither the file. If you want you can bounce all the tracks for your stereo mix or you can bounce just some, or one by muting the tracks you don't want.I think that's what your trying to do?

Thanks elser! That worked...and you know...I did exactly that right off the bat and it just bounced out either a blank wav file or just the bass track (can't remember which). I must have goofed somewhere. Thanks again!-Steve

You can also find it in the "file" menu I think, at the bottom. One thing I have learned is that you should mark an empty track before bouncing. If you are marking a piano track, sometimes the sustain doesn't work. Just create a new track and leave it empty. In the bounce window, set it to stereo interleaved and 44.1, 16 bit wave. That should work!

Quote: you should mark an empty track before bouncingThanks for the tip - that has happened to me once or twice and I didn't know why.

You basically have to have nothing selected (no chunks of audio or MIDI) selected, Cycle turned off (or defined for exactly the start/stop points within which you want to bounce)... otherwise it will interpret your current selection as the area you'd like to bounce. It can be a little aggravating, but that's the deal. By the same token, it can be really handy in cases where you're creating several small bits of sound/music in the same file. Say you were working on several short variations of a musical bit for TV segues (or in my less-glamorous case, a local theater production). Several cues based on similar sounds and needing identical effects/environments. You could select a region on one track that spans the length you need to bounce down. You can use the Markers, up in the Global tracks area, that way too.

Anne asked me via PM to look it up in the manual and I did, so I'll paste the info here too:1. Adjust the project length (using the ghostly bracket up in the measures ruler of the Global tracks area)2. deselect all regions (click in the no-man's land off all tracks and regions)3. turn off cycle mode (pretty sure that's the / key on a numeric keypad, and I just tested that it's C on a laptop kybd)
