I don't think anyone here would debate the usefulness of a pickup in a live setting, it's just that pickups don't hear the guitar the way the ear does; they amplify a single aspect of an instrument that we normally hear as source+reflections, so there's really no single p/u that'll give you what a microphone does. There's no reason not to record guitars using pickups, as long as you don't mind it sounding unnatural.

Unless it rains. You never want to haul your gear in a pickup in the rain. No matter how you mic it, it gets wrecked.
