Quote:Thanks for the responses. I'll definitely be getting it as soon as I can, as well as some good headphonesI don't know what you'll be using the headphones for but I've never been able to mix on them. I just use them for working where I don't want to disturb the rest of the house during the evening. Recently my old pair pretty much just fell apart and I've settled on the basic idea that what I want most is noise-cancelling or sound-isolating headphones so that the noise from the rest of the house (like conversations, tv, etc) doesn't get through to me as much.I'm taking them back because they don't fit very well but I bought a $40 pair of Sony noise-cancelling headphones and they did a pretty good job in terms of silencing the "outside" noise. Since I don't use them for mixing, the sound quality itself isn't that critical for me.

I'm just using the phones for recording, not for mixing.I do need to get the sound as good as possible for songs and some session work I have been asked to do, so what suggestions do you have Andre? My issue is that I don't want to go all out and spend hundreds on soundproofing, because i'll be moving in a few months, and im not sure of what the situation will be at that point so I don't want to waste money I don't have to begin with. But I do need as much help as possible like I said for TAXI submissions, for my teaching, and also for the paid session work i'll be doing in the next couple of months (although they realize they aren't going to be getting 100% studio quality stuff, and for those that require it I will be going to a professional studio for, but thats only when absolutely necessary).

Thanks for the article... i'm going to be using the stuff from the article, and i'm going to be buying the Reflexion tomorrow so hopefully my recordings will improve quite a bit now.

Soundproofing is very expensive and is designed to keep sound from leaking out and/or getting into your room. You more than likely need acoustic treatment which utilizes bass traps and absorbers/diffusers to stop reflections, standing waves etc. in your tracking space. Here is a link to a YouTube vid on how to make Bass Traps.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyYUpkpL0gwThey are portable so you can take them when you move. You can find the Dow Corning 703/705 or rock wool from various places on the net.

Oh yeah...try Sony MDR 7506 headphones. Under $100 and very pleasant to track with.

I think the solution we've come up with is to use a Reflexion filter, and then have a hanging duvet like the SoundOnSound article suggests. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

I've got the Reflexion sitting here right now; just singing into it you can tell it really helps out a ton. Once I figure out the mic stand attachment (you have to put it together yourself and it looks kind of complicated haha) i'll have it up and hopefully get some time to record some stuff this weekend. But, anyone interested in it should definitely check it out because like I said, just by speaking into it you can hear that its like talking in a completely soundproofed room.

AJ, one thing you might want to do is assemble the attachment backwards so the mic stand doesn't fall over on you. That bugger is heavy and hangs out as is! I have 2 10lb dumbell weights on the bottom of the mic stand just to keep it steady but in the end reversed it so the weight was over the center. It limits how far back you can put the mic, but you probably don't want to bury it all the way back any way or things will now be too dead.If you want a picture let me know!Cheers,J.J.

A picture would help, thanks. When I got it I was surprised at how small it is, but then I realized how heavy its going to be when I attach it to the stand.
