Re: collaborating via the internet
the coolest thing about the net to me, is working with other people...i have been collabing for 4 years with folks via the net, though i have never charged or paid, it's all friendship based stuff...it can be a lot of fun!....great way to learn too..worked with a guy in Poland a few times, that was a challenge because of language, but we managed....
i don't play in bands anymore, so it's kind of fun to work with others via the net.....i work alone mostly, but i do enjoy working with others...i am glad to see that others are finding a way to enjoy it and even profit from it.

Re: collaborating via the internet
I just stumbled across this site yesterday:http://www.esession.comIt's basically a market for connecting musicians with studio musicians, mixers, and mastering engineers. But it's also an interface for collaborating long distance, while using different DAW systems:http://www.esession.com/demos/songpage/index.html

Re: collaborating via the internet
I just found this thread while I was looking for an explanation of Studio Buddy. (Anyone know what that is & why you have to install it on your PC?)Anyway, I've been doing online recording, sequencing etc. for quite awhile. (I think this is an amazing way to collaborate & one of the wonders of the net. Well, that and POR].... never mind.)Yesterday I posted this info on this thread-http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... 117&page=1

Re: collaborating via the internet
have you guys ever heard of or used NINJAM??? It's a program that allows musicians to link to a server and collaberate in REAL TIME.... So you literally could work on a project together in real time instead of bouncing tracks back and forth...http://www.cockos.comThat's the company's name, they also make REAPER which is a fantastic DAW that uses minimum CPU and is simple to use... I much prefer it to Cubase....Brad

Re: collaborating via the internet
Sounds like a cool program, but I prefer to do the back and forth thing so I can really take my time. I think I might look into it though and try it out once I have more time available in a few months.Windowman, cool concept you have going on there. Theres also a site called Quality Backing Tracks that people can check into. They are a british company and its basically karaoke tracks on the site, but they also have studio musicians that will recreate anything for you, and its about $100 per song if I remember right. I have some songs to send off to them eventually; they'll send you each individual track too so its not just premixed stuff that you cant control. Your system would probably be better for original ideas though since your willing to go back and fourth with people and get it perfect. I'll keep you in mind too... once I get more money hopefully I can work this way a lot.

Re: collaborating via the internet
I have to disagree with preffering a back and forth method...Maybe it's just me, but there aint NOTHING better than writing material with a "Band" jamming along. I find that that's when the creative juices are flowing the most. I mean back and forth is cool, but I prefer to know what something sounds like NOW, instead of having to wait.I've been in many bands and miss the hell out of practicing and gigging etc... there's just something magical about a group of people writing music together at the same time.Just my thought and preference :c)

Re: collaborating via the internet
Well yeah I prefer the in the moment thing for when your working with people in a band atmosphere, but if its going to be online I always like to take my time, mainly because I don't usually have the time to sit on the computer for long periods of time to work on music. I always like just having music already written though that I like, then I work just either by myself or witha group of people to bounce ideas off of for lyrics and melodies.

You're right ajenkz, both ways work and integrating different approaches also works. It also depends on what type of music you're doing. If you needed an elaborate string line, it probably wouldn't work on the fly.(BTW- I noticed that you haven't got any songs up here yet. I'd like to hear what you're working on!) Contact me if you'd like to start on something, it could be fun.Later,Wade
