Mini Firewire?

Post by phoenix » Tue May 30, 2006 3:17 am

If a laptop has a mini Firewire connection can you still connect it to a firewire interface? The laptop is 4-pin and the interface is 6-pin!! Does this affect quality etc.?

As long as the interface isn't bus-powered and has its own power supply, yes. I believe the extra two pins are used for power.

I've got a laptop with mini firewire and I'm using Edirol FA-101 which comes with it's own power pack so you can use it with the 4 pin port but it can also be plugged into a 6 pin which powers the unit without need for powerpacks (very good for travelling musicians).Check the link for more info on the firewire standards.http://developer.apple.com/documentatio ... s.htmlI've been considereing getting a 6 pin firewire card to slot into my card drive but I'm not sure if all of them deliver phantom power.
