Richard,For these hybrid pieces, I was trying to write the orchestration first and put the "electro" elements on it afterwards but what ended up happening for me was that it never sounded like a true hybrid, the orchestra always "won".Now my strategy is to either create the "electro" bed first and compose on top of it, or to integrate the electro elements into the composition process, either on paper or in the computer. It's a fine line, it seems.It would be interesting to hear how you approach this type of piece from a composition standpoint. With orchestral composition, it seems the composition should come first and the orchestration second, but with the electronic stuff, it's often the sound that inspires the composition so the production is more important nearer the beginning of the process, at least that's been my experience.Thoughts? Typically, I'll start with some sort of rhythmic track - i.e., drum patterns, often multi-layered and processed. I'll start with this because it's much easier to make the orchestral instruments fit with the rhythmic groove than the other way around. After the rhythm tracks are in place, I'll begin adding other instruments and occasional sound fx that fit with the piece.
