Dispatch due 1 14 08.. Jazz/swing
Hey guys! There is such a wide range of interpretation to listings from the writers posting them to us figuring them out. Learning to read them for what they are is really the trick, yet this seems to be fairly straight forward. I'm hoping folks can let me know opinions on whether this one hits..Please listen:http://www.myspace.com/earthtoneproduct ... eWonderful Way (vocals)and other versionsListing:An Independent Publisher needs SWING/MEDIUM TEMPO ROMANTIC SONGS for an upcoming recording project for a jazz/swing band that spent it’s formative years working for Disney. Happy songs with a romantic twist are specifically what is needed. The song's lyrics must really stand out, in a playful and sweet "lucky in love" tone. Musically, he's just looking for great songs with solid and engaging melodies. Demo quality is fine for this listing. Lyrics:A Wonderful WayWords and Music: Monty SchmidtA wonderful way is what you say when I ask you "how ya doin' ?" It's in your eyes Your smile tells all it needs to I can tell that you're in love.A wonderful way is when you whisper "honey, can I hold you close to me", My tears tell all they need to, Can you tell that I'm in love?I don't care if you're out all night, runnin' round the town.I know when you're home in the mornin' 'cause we're foolin' round. A wonderful way is how it feels when I don't need to tell you beat me thereYour kiss tells all it needs to Can't you tell that we're in love. Thanks for your feedback, I really feel good about this one. I'll keep you posted on any positive results i.e., if this gets a forward you'll be sure to hear!! Monty

Hi Monty,Nice tune, good playing. I don't feel qualified to comment on lyrics so I'll leave them alone.I'm listening on small computer speakers right now so I'll hit a few things that strike me off the bat that I can hear on these things:1. Pan the vocals center. Even in jazz this is a common aesthetic, I think it's a bit distracting having them panned to the right. If a horn solo came in in the right speaker, we'd accept it but I think vocals need to be right up the middle. Leave the piano on the left, put the guitar in the right and the bass and vocals in the center and I think it'll groove better too.2. The vocals sound a bit pitchy in spots to me. It's a pretty tough melody and your singer is on top of it but there's a few spots at the end of phrases that sound a bit out of tune to my ears.3. I'd edit the solo down to one A section and jump straight to the bridge. The solo is pretty good but not great and the rhythm section loses the groove a tiny bit right at the top of the second A anyway. I think for libraries, into and out of solos quick is a good practice. If they sign the song you can always offer them the "uncut" version. My 2 cents, for what it's worth.Good stuff, good luck!!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Thanks for the productions tips, Mazz, much apprec. I'll definitely mess around with the mix some moreI spoke with Taxi inquiring about the production quality to get clarity on what it was they're really looking for in regards to the intention for the song, and it's really material they're looking for. I'm very interested to know if you, mazz, or anyone reading feels like commenting if this fits the "playful", "happy", "romantic twist" vibe the listing is after. I'm also submitting the horn and piano arrangements as well just to demonstrate the capacity and potential of the song as material. I'm hoping that it might "catch" and become a new "standard" if it's possible still for tunes like this... maybe it'll find it's way to broadway if I'm lucky Always a dreamer!!!

Monty, Should work for listing, if they can get past some vocal glitches. Love the horn version, would work great combined with vocals. Loui Armstrong would have killed this tune!Best of luck.Dave

Hey, thanks for the encouragement guys! Putting this together for a time sensitive dispatch listing, the "demo" quality was all there was time to really achieve. Thank God, or I would have waited to submit it for a listing down the road when I had time and spent the time on the production. I would have liked the singer to put a few more rehearsal hours in to really nail dynamics and the like. For what it is I'm fairly confident in it. I'm putting things together for the very near future to work a vocal and horn feature for this tune. Keep ya' posted!! Got my fingers X'ed.....Thanks again for your thoughts Vicky and Dave.
