Hey Woods, had a quick listen (I'm @ work, shhhh) will listen again when I get home. I noticed you ignored my suggestion on restructuring the verse and it was the right call. With all the instrumentation it works nicely. I just redid one of my older songs and two days and 5 versions later I ended up with the same arrangement!! I'll stop back later... Geo

Hey, Woods, had another listen, from the production point of view the low end maybe should come up a bit (kick and bass) and a little timing glitch in the hi hat just before the last chorus but aside from that she's coming along nicely... Geo

I'm new to the board so hopefully people will take to me. But a warning, I do give both blunt and ambitious comments much like Simon Cowell This song would sound great in a coffee shop, but if you're looking to promote your songs like individual packages I would suggest giving it more of a commercial sound than the Bruce Springsteen kitchen bluegrass sound. If you've heard his last album you'll know what my reference is about. I love your voice. I would like to hear more of an independent voice where as right now it sounds like you are singing to the instrumentation rather than independently. It sounds a bit stoic (almost routine) and not "free" enough. The more ideas you can inspire in a screener or even someone wanting to "buy" the song the better. And one of the ways to enhance that is by the many qualities of your recording. Make sure every element of your recording sounds alive and professional and make sure the instuments don't sound packaged or stumbling. The same applies to the vocals. If you sing your recordings with some real passion or angst you'll only push your song that much further. Again, give the song a commercial sound. I wouldn't use coffee shop instrumentation unless you're promoting a band that's doing it and they can really tear it up. If you're a soloist I would only use musical inflections rather than solid instruments unless the instrument is relevant to the commercial aspect of the song. If you're not good at doing something on your recording, don't do it! Know what you're promoting, don't expect the screeners to fgure out how to promote the song. Back to this song, I would definitely speed it up slightly and add a solid snare hit on the second and fourth count of each measure. I would take out the Lonely Like The Moon phrase as it doesn't apply to any commercial situations that I can think of. A "lonely" theme can work in sitcom situations, etc. but the song is too lively to fit into that kind of ambience. The song right now is "in between" meaning it's not clearly marketable for anything right now. So if you do want to market it for something like a somber or melancholy scene in a sitcom I would slow it down. If not, I would emphasize some excitement in the song, first with the snare hit like I mentioned and then having continuous musicality rather than a stutter-stop musical sound. You could benefit also by having simple musical sounds rather than a specific genre style. It's kind of like selling your house - the less of your own decor in your house the better it will sell. Once you've conquered these things then I think you can start to focus on different things like verse placement. It's not far off right now as it stands. Good stuff.
