IMO, what you are saying about micing the BVX is really all about tricking the ear/mind into thinking it's hearing something that it expects to hear in nature. If one is hearing a choir in a room, the extremely complex phase relationships between singers and the room give the ear/mind clues as to where the singers are, how big/small the room is, etc.Moving the same vocalist into different positions around the mic for different parts can mimic this effect but I think that it needs to be well thought out in advance arrangement-wise. Perhaps if each part (of the chord) is to be doubled, then each part needs one direct recording and possibly one from, say 20% off axis and then the same part a little more off axis than that. Even moving closer and further away as in the Michael Jackson example would be good. This is basically akin to EQing using the mic. But if your room sucks, you'll just multiply the sucking effect of your room by however many times you do this.Alternatively, in the mix, eq and pan the doubled tracks to give the psychoacoustic picture of the choir the ear expects and use a nice ambience program in a reverb unit. This is what I would recommend if the room is substandard.It's not nice to fool Mother Nature (except sometimes )Mazz

Your main problem in trying to hit the modern sound is not the instrumentation but the synths your're usin to represent it if you get me.As a drum programming specialist I'd say especially the drums.I'll whip you up some replacement drums if you want if you send me a loop of your drums and a mp3 of the songs.
