New Tune: All Thru the Night
Hey everyone,Got a new tune that's about wrapped up (or so I'd like to think). As always, I could appreciate comments on structure, tone, mix, lyrics etc. You all have been a big help in this on going project. You can listen here: http://www.soundclick.com/util/streamm3 ... 47&q=hiThe song is in what I would call a plain ole 'Rock and Roll' genre. Hopefully, it doesn't sound too dated. Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts!

Re: New Tune: All Thru the Night
Hey RockermanSome very cool heavy metal there. Great guitar work. This one rocks! With so much energy here I'm not sure how much the specific lyrics matter. I did notice that most of the lyrics were very cliche, but like I said, does it matter? Also, I don't know in this genre how much a strong chorus matters. You don't have one, but I think this type of music is more about the overall sound and energy and you got plenty of that! What is your goal with this track? I see the best use would be in film/TV either as the full track or with just the no-vocal backing track. Often, sports videos or high energy shows will use this kind of backing track. I've had some success there with the backing tracks to my "Adrenaline" and "Physical World". I don't mean to change the subject to being about me (OK, maybe a little )... Visit www.onthebrink.org and play the video about global warming. At around 2:16 into the short video the music from "Adrenaline" comes in. I got that because I had the backing track available at the right time.I could also see the full track being used for a scene which calls for metal music playing in the background.Long live rock! Casey

Hey Rockermann. I’m new to this forum, but not new to the business – I make my living as a recording engineer/producer and composer. I’ve been browsing the forum for a while and have listened to most of the tracks you’ve posted. Being new here, I’ll try to follow the suggestions and use part of the review format. The structure and melody of the tune seems pretty solid. So I will focus on this topic:Style__ On target for today's market in ________ genreX Not current sounding__ Hard to classifyStyle Comments:I’m in your same age demographic. It’s hard to shake your roots (I struggle with the same issues). Although this tune is not as dated sounding as some of the other tracks, there are a couple of things that are dead giveaways. Great musicianship here. Just being picky to try and help. The last thing any of us need is another “that sounds great” pat on the back.• One is the guitar tone. Compare the tone here to an Audioslave track. The tone on this has more of that eighties solid marshall buzz. Newer sounds have a wider tone- more grit and attack. Some more syncopation in the guitar tracks could help too. A little less “Rainbow in the Dark”. The “hammer on” intro is great guitar work, but immediately sets the “hair band” tone.• Two is the vocal vibrato (This point applies to me too—that vibrato demon is hard to tame). It’s hard to make that not date you. Some are doing it, but the vocal is usually odd to begin with (like System of a Down). This vocalist has great pipes! Turn down the held vibrato and turn on some throat grit and it might help.Summary-I’m not sure what your goals are. This kind of sound will still work for the regional bar band thing. If you have higher aspirations then I would suggest a sonic makeover. You’re a talented band. I’d like to hear you shoot for an Audioslave/Velvet Revolver vibe. Try something way out of your comfort zone. Btw- I’m harder on myself than anyone else!

You don't have one, but I think this type of music is more about the overall sound and energy and you got plenty of that! You're right, the lyrics are not poetry, but they're not intended to be. I think some times cliche is what works. It's intent was to be a very basic rock and roll tune. No thinking involved.Quote:What is your goal with this track? If then, we can get some stuff placed, that would be great. I think you're right about a video soundtrack or something... Could be a good fit for this tune.Quote:I could also see the full track being used for a scene which calls for metal music playing in the background.Long live rock! CaseyThanks for listening, Casey. I appreciate the comments. And congratulations on your Adrenaline piece being used for that video. Fit very nicely.

The guitar tone, the hammer-ons (actually pull-offs in this case), the whole feel does have that past feel to it. I think we're doing a bit better getting a more modern sound on some other tunes. Envy for one, but we still have that 80's sound sometimes. Our goals are simple. We're not a touring band. We record our parts and pass them back and forth over the Internet from 4 different locations across the globe. I mix down the final product and then we listen. Simple. If we are then lucky enough to have our music used in some format, that will certainly be a plus. Who knows, there has to be a 80's period piece on the drawing board at some movie studio. Right? We are indeed trying to get a bit more of a modern sound, so I (and we) certainly appreciate your comments and suggestions. We'll do our best to incorporate them as we work forward. Thanks again for your time!

Re: New Tune: All Thru the Night
Rockermann,Just a thought. This would depend on my schedule, but would you be open to a remix and master of a tune? I could set up an ftp for you to drop the individual tracks. I would want as raw of files as possible and rebuild the mix from scratch - no cost, no strings. If I like the results, the only thing I would want is the right to use the mix for demo purposes for my production studio. I would want to listen some more to help decide on the track, but right now I'm leaning toward Envy. Might be a couple of weeks before I have a slot to do this. Interested?

I'm the one that's been doing the mixing of our stuff, and have a limited amount of time doing it. I would be excited to hear what a professional could make of it all.You can PM me if you like and we can go over the details. I should actually mention this to the rest of the guys, before commiting, but I doubt they will have any issues with it. Thanks for the offer. This could be very interesting!Steve

Re: New Tune: All Thru the Night
No problem Steve. Let me know what the "guys" say and I will pm my contact info. This might be interesting in a couple of ways. In listening to many of the demos that people are submitting, I've noticed that even though comments are something like "sounds broadcast quality to me" often the actual mixes are lacking. That's not a slam in any way. It takes years to be able to produce great mixes. I've been at this for more than 15 years and am still learning and improving. None of the demos that I've posted are even close to broadcast quality. It will be interesting to see how much of a difference a mix can make. Of course that also means I'll be sticking my neck out. Maybe it's good that I posted under a pseudonym
