Does instrumental (no Vocals) mean just a track no

Post by bombaycharlie1 » Mon Aug 06, 2007 3:56 am

Hi. I'm sure this answer has been given before, but I can't find it. Does this listing " Authentic-sounding 1970s-style FUNK/SOUL/R&B/DISCO INSTRUMENTALS (no vocals) in the vein of Parliament/Funkadelic, the Isley Bros., Rick James, Bootsy Collins, War, the S.O.S. Band, Sly & The Family Stone, etc. are wanted by the President of an LA-based Music Library. Mid- to up-tempo only. An interesting 1-5 second riff at the top of your song is helpful -- it's good to establish the style from the get-go -- but not necessary. And please stay away from MIDI and synth/Casio-sounding tracks. The president is a successful TV music composer and used to be a TAXI Screener himself. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Aug. 16, 2007.TAXI # S070816FK"mean that they need a track with no melody, or a track with a melody? Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks in advance.Charlie

An instrumental simply means a track that has no vocals... it can definitely have a melody, and in this case I think they are specifically looking for a good hook or riff.

A few months ago someone posted a song that was the backing track with the vocal removed. I don't think it got forwarded. To my ears it sounded just like what it was, the backing track, as opposed to an actual instrumental "song" which would have the melody played by some lead instrument(s). This is just my opinion but I think this is what the listing is asking for. You might want to go and listen to some of the examples that are listed just to be sure. I'm pretty sure most of the ones they list have some instrumentals in their catalog.Good luck,Mazz

thanks for the input...what instrument would you use to emulate Sugarfoot from The Ohio Players, or Bootsy Collins or Larry Blackmon from Cameo? ( LOL)

( LOL)I was thinking about horn section, 70s style lead synth, and organ. I don't think I'll try to emulate or replace singers but as a keyboardist I would look to Billy Preston, Sly, Isaac Hayes, Bernie Worrell, Stevie Wonder. Those were the funky cats I remember from the 70s.Have fun, get funky! Mazz

I am very new compared to y'all with 500+ posts but I am submitting to this as well. Maybe the newbie will prevail. It's on funkmastas!!! If y'all want to listen to my track, it's called "Not What I Want- Instrumental" . Let me know what you think. I dont know how to link a song to this post but you can find it on my hosting page. While you are at it, you can hear the same song with the vocals in it. Peace.
