Minimalist Orchestral Instrumentals

Post by horacejesse » Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:25 am

I am not sure what they want here. Does anyone have an interpretation? Quote:NEW LISTING -- MINIMALIST ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALS a la Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich are needed by a new LA-based Music Library being started by veterans of that industry. They offer a non-exclusive, 50/50 split deal -- you keep your original copyrights. Broadcast quality needed. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY -- NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. For ground submissions, please enclose a S.A.S.E. if you would like a response. Submissions must be received no later than March 12, 2007.TAXI # Y070312OR

I actually listened to the "a la's mentioned in the listing because, like you, I wasn't clear on what "minimalist orchestral" meant.Try doing that as it will give you an idea as to what Phillip Glass, terry Riley and Steve Reich are doing.Good Luck...

You usually either love him or hate him. For me it's like Chinese water torture, although I can appreciate the fact that he's truly created his own sound that is nothing like anything else.I see this music used a lot for shows about medical science breakthroughs and especially about things like space, black holes, birth of the universe, things like that.FWIW, although it's not using orchestral instruments, I did a short "a la Phillip Glass" demo for an opportunity outside of Taxi. I never heard back so maybe it stinks, but if you were to substitue orchestral instruments for the synthesized instruments, this is generally the kind of thing Phillip Glass does:www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/PrivateArea/Phi ... emo.mp3You can find most of the "a la's" on iTunes and at least get 30-seconds of a variety of their music.Dave

Knock Knock. Who's there? Philip GlassKnock Knock. Who's there? Philip GlassKnock Knock. Who's there? Philip GlassKnock Knock. Who's there? Philip GlassOK Bad Joke. Recommended: Terry Riley: "In C" (Bang on a Can Allstars' version is very nice). Steve Reich: "Music for 18 Musicians" is a great piece of music (original version on ECM). The only Philip Glass I can take is "Koyannisquatsi" which is a film score (OK IMHO Glass is a better film composer than a concert composer). I also like John Adams although he is not very minimalist anymore.I wrote a minimalist piece in just intonation a few years ago that may be in the ballpark as well. I intend to submit it for this listing but will be writing a new piece as well. Here's a link: http://www.broadjam.com/transmit/transm ... ndsq=1Have fun,John Mazzei

Maybe it's not particularly "orchestral" in nature but it's really enjoyable and a great example of the minimalist approach.matto

Hey Matt,Thanks for listening. After my last post I realized that I hadn't heard it in a while and remembered that it wasn't quite as orchestral as well, thanks for the reminder. My composition teacher is friends with Terry Riley so I have had some exposure to the style from that end as well.Take care,John

A really nice piece, Mazz.

I was told once that minimalist music was "classical techno" Has a beat, but used orchestrally I think was the explanation. I hope that helps.
