Fun and whimsical.. I would love some feedback "NEW LINK"

Post by svallee » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:01 pm

I recently got 3 returns on the Fun and Whimsical composers listing. Screener #53 only check of the "recording" box on all 3 without leaving any comments about what was wrong with the recording quality.
I've never been returned for recording quality before and I've had several forwards and a few placements.
So I'm a little confused and would like to have some clarity so I can make improvements.

The 3 pieces are
Fun Getting Caught-Orchestral
Celtic Fun- Orchestral
Calliope Circus Time- Circus Band

the tracks are here

Thanks

Fun Getting Caught - the levels are very low at the beginning -- I think you need more balance in the mix as I can barely hear some of it and I have my speakers cranked high. Sounds like a good cartoon-style track.

Celtic Fun - I think this is a good world piece but it seems too intense to be 'whimsical'.

Calliope Circus Time - definitely fun, but I wonder if the samples might be the issue, especially @ 1:24, whatever is playing doesn't sound like a 'band' instrument. Might be too much cymbal towards the end. I'd probably A-B this with a marching band or circus band and really think about mixing it to sound authentic.

Thanks for the feedback Humingbird. I thought maybe the track was a little low. Though I set my peak at minus 3db like Dave Trotter/Studio 51 says is industry standard for TV cues. I guess I was trying to get too much dynamic range for effect. I'll use some compression next time.

Thanks again
