Yes, you need a full version of KONTAKT to play third-party sounds...

I've learned it hard way... Purchased a commercial soundbank like this one, expecting it would play (and it does - for 15 minutes) I was rather frustrated with NI's responses, as they kept being rather vague about it.

Eventually, one of their moderators on NI forum mad it clear: no third party sounds will play permanently in free version of KONTAKT. Also, not all NI libraries will play in the free version, neither.

They should rename it to "feature limited, trial version".

Actually there are some third party sounds that use the free version of Kontakt 3.5 and 4; The Oceanway /Drum Masters group buy drum sample set is still working.

Mojobone,

As far as i know, you're talking about a custom player based in KONTAKT, as described:

"... a limited-time bundle that includes the following kits that are playable from Sonic Reality's latest Infinite Player plug-in powered by Kontakt 3.5:
- Sonic Reality's Infinite Player plug-in powered by Kontakt*

- 12 different Ocean Way® Drums DL mix kits from dry to medium to ambient

- 15 Drum Masters 2 Signature Drum Kits featuring drum kits of legendary drummers"

or you actually managed to play them without the custom player installed?

Ah, that's right, Infinite Player was included in the bundle; I forgot that important detail.

Yeah there are basically two types of sample libraries available for Kontakt. Those that are just libraries and those that include the Player. The advantage of including the Player is you can play them without Kontakt and the developer gets copy protecition via NI's service center application. The disadvantage is that the developer has to license the Player from NI, adding to their expense, and typically, the price of the library.

If all libraries were playable by the free Player there would be less incentive for anybody to buy the full version of Kontakt (although in my opinion the sounds are worth having) and the advantage of copy protection (which is tied to the individual bundled Player) would no longer exist.
