The Retriever is the most awesome guide to movies ever! Worth the cover price jes' for songs in movies alone, but the great appendices with filmographies of all the great and not-so-great actors and directors are a trivia buff's nocturnal emission. Yeah IMDB is a great resource when you need to know a specific thing or for really detailed credits, but with the Retriever's help, you can really kill at Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon. George Lazenby to George Clooney, by way of KB in five movies or less is a snap of the fingers.

Thanks for starting this thread up, Ern!

I actually came up with my list without looking at anyone else's (other than your Gladiator mention, which I couldn't leave out of my list!), so it was great going back and seeing what other people had put down. Nice seeing Fargo on your list as well...:)

It's tough coming up with a list like this! It's hard to argue with the top-rated/grossing films, but then there's always those special movies that would never make their way on those lists.

That book sounds absolutely amazing, I'll definitely have to look it up. I've been making the most of the internet in terms of finding lists of top grossing films for each year.
I wonder about things like the National Film Registry... as you said, there are some pretty strange movies on there... Terminator? Groundhog Day? I love both movies, but to hold them up as significant movies worthy of preserving for all time, so that our grandchildren's grandchildren's grandchildren can look back and see who we were in 1984 or 1993?... don't know...:)

Cheers!
Roland
