Yes, it's still an issue.

Antivir is decent and better than Avast, which is the next closest recommendation I would make.
I'm a computer and network security guy :geek:

Only connecting it when needed is an excellent idea and you probably don't even need an AV if that's the case. Really, it's true ;)

Fair enough. But be aware, some programs like that (I'm not familiar with that one) actually falsify those types of notifications to keep users coming back to their product or to up-sell something else they produce. FWIW.

Good luck!

Is this the one you're using? - http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/ibm- ... rewall/421
If so, check the date on that article. Don't know of anything more current. It was the first link on a Google search. FYI.

I had the free malwarebytes for a long time, never found anything and it seems to update every day, but then it said something about upgrading to the new version, and when I did it keeps crashing or hanging up, I guess they thought it was time for me to get the $$one. So I updated another free one spy something, and of course it finds adware, I don't remember what happened but I finally uninstalled it and got the free microsoft essentials. I don't have a lot of confidence in most of these programs, probably most are meant to scare you into buying their paid programs, and in that respect are sort of malwareish themselves.

ISPs do a pretty good job with worms and trojans; imo, more people are susceptible to browser attacks, unless they have a fly-by-night ISP; it's in their interest to protect customers. I use No-Script in my primary browser, and I'm behind a firewall and a router; I've had few to no issues. This was not the case with Norton. I think virus checkers are simply more trouble than they're worth on a DAW machine. I'm hearing from a lot of folks that Microsoft Security Essentials is as good and easy to use as anything and free.

Norton, Symantec, and the like are useless. They will bog down a machine and do little to nothing to help. Really.

Maybe it's just me, but whenever I've bought antivirus Macafee software, it's always come with multiple licenses. So it's on my office computer and also nextdoor in the studio on the DAW. I just don't run it on the DAW. I have it on there for the VERY few times I need to connect it to the internet for some kind of operating system patch or something (when I say rare, I mean, like once a year).

Simple problem, simple solution.

BTW - I buy my antivirus software from Costco, so maybe that's why it comes with multiple licenses free... not sure.
