It filters, but it filters more than just the normal or simple.

Yes, it can make something quite bland [in your mix] sound very good.

In use, it's rather like a ganged filter/limiter; it allows you to really saturate a few selected frequencies. Useful, if not exactly subtle. Looks like they've added quite a few new features, since I last used it, though.
