In the Flow

Post by petehawk » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:47 pm

Hey all,

I would love to hear your thoughts on my song "In the Flow" (click on my Taxi page below). I played it for my sister in law (a professional singer) and she loved it. She told me it was smooth jazz. Me, I'm not sure what it is, but I do like the drums/bass a lot.

Thanks!

Pete,

I don't think your link to your Taxi page is working. I know mine is as follows.

http://www.taxi.com/oakhilllane

My artist name is "Oakhill Lane" hence the "oakhilllane" part of the link. I set that up in my artist profile. I use ReverbNation.com when I want people to listen to my music though.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info. Not sure why the songs aren't showing up on my Taxi page.

You can listen to the song here...

Pete,

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't have the experience like many on this forum do, but I think the drums sound great, but the way they're mixed into the rest of the piece didn't quite work for me. The next person might say I'm completely wrong though. And I'm not a big fan of water sounds (not sure why) so I'm not fond of the fact that it spans the entire piece. And I wonder if you might get better mileage out of this piece if you varied the sweeping pads a bit as well. Hopefully someone gives you some better feedback than me. All that said though, I really like it and obviously you are very talented.

Hey Pete .. Real nice tune .. I agree with Mark , the drums are a little too much front loaded .. Take them back a bit to smooth out the smoothness of the tune ... Nice feel though , ambient . But I also agree its not smooth Jazz. Just smooth.. I like it alot .. Way to go

Thanks for the tips! I appreciate them all.

A few days after I finished recording my album Ambient Autumn, where this song came from, my HD crashed and I lost all the files. I've been been using a DROBO with two terabytes of space (which is divided up between 4 hard drives). It's a very cool machine and I wish I had moved the associated files there long ago. Live and learn!

Hey, Pete, I don't think we've met.

Nice piece, very transcendental and relaxing.

If it were mine I'd lose the water altogether – it's a SFX that a music producer wants music to go over, and would mix that in for him/herself where necessary. My experience of this forum so far is that, despite what I hear in a piece, someone else hears something different. Therefore, if you take out the water reference, a music sup may feel it's right for a train ride or someone crying over a loss. Maybe use a pad in its place, maybe it doesn't need one

I would also slightly increase the Release on the bass notes, let it ring a little. It's just stopping short of flowing. Finally, I would go in and fix that double snare hit so the first one is a little less prominent, either by reducing ite velocity and/or its volume. Make it feel more like what a live drummer would do.

My personal opinions only, you appreciate.

Nick

Hi Pete. I was already to sit back in my chair after the mellow intro. I got a bit of a shock when the drums came in. Definitely makes it more of a rock vibe for me. If you submit this to Taxi I'd also advise losing the water effect. Nice one. Cheers, Doug
