Re: Hearing test. dynamic range, pitch, eq,phase,imaging...
I don't think it's a pass or fail type of test. For example I was always curious what the highest frequency I could hear is, turns out it's 14khz. If I can only hear a db change of say 3db, it's pretty silly to start tweaking 1 or 2 db, because the only difference I'll notice would be psychological, and if I turn up 3db and it's too loud, I could just turn it back down 3db and know I'm there without further tweaking. If Sammy can only hear 3khz-5khz, and boosts 2khz up 10db, it's probably gonna blow someone's ear drums, at least now if he knows he can't hear down there, lol, he'll hopefully leave that frequency alone, lol! If you can't hear a phase inversion, quit phase inverting, lol! If your deaf, I suppose you could mix by the meters, I don't know, lol!

That's kinda what I meant; some of your limitations will have more to do with your room, it's treatment, your equipment and the noise floor of your internal and external environments. At Blackbird Studio in TN, a trained engineer can hear increments of up to a tenth of a decibel throughout the frequency spectrum, but that room has over two and a half tons of custom built diffusers, and monitors that are well north of fifty grand, each. Your mileage may vary.

Besides the topic of art or production or actual music, how did you guys do on the hearing 'test'? I just took it and was fine until the 0.5 db, where I only got 7 of 10 - Now that I think of it, it probably also depends on the audio out, if you're on a laptop, etc.

Well, you did better than me. I started getting 4 and 5 out of 10 when the tests got down to 1.0 db variance.pboss wrote:Besides the topic of art or production or actual music, how did you guys do on the hearing 'test'? I just took it and was fine until the 0.5 db, where I only got 7 of 10...

I was using the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, using the built-in output from a G4 12 mac laptop -- it seems like there could be quite a variance between audio cards and listening environments. But yeah, the 0.5 was hard to hear. Back to music, right?!
