Please check this mix and critique ROCK

Post by larrymagee » Mon Mar 23, 2015 12:27 pm

My last submission was sent back because the panning wasn't right. Please let me know what you think about this.

Rhythm Guitars panned at 9:00, 2:00, 4:00
Lead Guitar, Drums, Bass - straight up
High Wild Lead Guitar - hard left and hard right

Also, I've gotten this as bout as loud and wild as I can. Is it enough? Due Weds.

https://soundcloud.com/larrymagee/take-it-back-master (SEE POST #5 FOR THE LATEST VERSION)

the 2nd example song was my inspiration...

CONTEMPORARY ROCK INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a successful Music Library that has a long history of cool placements in TV Shows, Feature Films, and Commercials. Please give them energetic Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that could be heard on the same playlist as acts like Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Rise Against, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following songs to get an idea of the vibe they’re looking for:

“Walk” by Foo Fighters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PkcfQtibmU

“Don’t Matter” by Kings of Leon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rowFbNYZwXs

"I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore" by Rise Against
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqQsZ8g8KHQ

Although the references have lyrics, this pitch is ONLY for Instrumentals – no vocals. They’d like to hear full-length Tracks (approximately 2 - 4 minutes) that are structured more like Songs than Cues. Please avoid faded endings. Give them Tracks that are straight ahead, guitar-based Rock with awesomely distorted guitar sounds, ballsy bass, and hard-hitting drums that make them see the sweat flying off the drummer’s hair! Melodically and rhythmically hooky guitar parts will go a long way for this pitch, and so will a totally rocked out, in-your-face attitude. Make them think they’re hearing a real band that just spent the last nine months on the road. Your Tracks can have a lead melody line or not for this pitch.

fwiw: I'm listening through headphones. Liking the drum sounds.
I think I get that the 1/8-note bass line is driving the tempo, but somehow it's buggin'
my ears that the kick isn't getting punchy-bass-n-sync support; maybe that's my odd problem :?

Also, around the 2:10+ mark, is the timing falling off? Sounds like the guitar is not on the beat.
Or... again, am I missing something? Could just be "OGS." (Old Guy Syndrome). 8-)

It's a good, hard-rockin' track.

Hi FS - I noticed that the bass sounded a little off tempo, too, a while back and then I forgot about it. I'm going to redo that, thanks!!!

Here's version 2 with the bass fixed (I hope). Thanks for noticing, funsongs. The timing of the guitar you hear at 2:10 is how I want it.

bring rhythm guitars up significantly. and I would pan them 100% hard L+R. make it as impressive as you can.

The L side guitar is likely too much noodle and not enough song part. good chops - but if you don't hear anything like that in the ref tunes, you should re-consider. IMO.

good luck.

wait... you can't use that excuse... I have that one copyrighted & trademarked!! :? 8-)

fwiw: there's still a tiny-yet-detectable shift... a dirty 'splice'/edit perhaps? at that 2:10 mark;
the groove after that sounds solid enough.

Thanks, Andy, I'll try the hard panning. That wild guitar was added because I didn't think the song was balsy enough. Maybe bringing up the rhythm guitars and hard panning them will fix that.

funsongs - I'll check that glitch you hear.

THANK YOU

Here's version 4

https://soundcloud.com/larrymagee/take-it-back-ver-4 VERSION 5 ON NEXT PAGE

Andy made another great suggestion about the bass. It's now been EQ'd & compressed to sit better with the drums and I added some distortion. He also had some melody suggestions but I think I'll save those for the next time.

I also now have all the rhythm guitars Hard R or L.

If you have a chance to listen to this new mix, please let me know if it needs tweaking. THANKS!
