How do you find tv shows/media that use your genre?

Post by guitargurumike » Tue Jun 02, 2015 9:02 am

Hello Friends!

I've been researching TV shows and the types of music they use. I figured a good way to start would be the #1 show (which is Game Of Thrones BTW), and go down the ratings from there.

The problem is, I'm 20 deep and none of them use the type of music I make--my GENRE (EDM and all its sub genres).

Does anyone out there have a more directed approach to finding shows that use specific genres? I'm a little lost here and overwhelmed by the thought of researching 100,000 shows that may or may not use EDM.

Also, the question could apply to other media--film, video games, internet--feel free to address those things too.

Thank you in advance for your time,
Michael

I use TuneFind
Say if you want to find out if The Prodigy (EDM artist) have been used in something, you search for them, and get results:

That's an excellent solution, thanks! Searching similar artists...

Just thinking from the other point of view... look for listings that are opps for your type of music, they will often say "like the music on such-and-such-a-show" which will help you zero in on what to watch/listen to

and, think about how you can lean EDM into other genres, like news, corporate, documentary, space exploration, commercials, check those listings and a la's and shows/artists to see if you can expand your style into additional commercial genres.

Aw shucks you're too kind Russell, means a lot coming from you. :)

The guitargurumike thing is a hangover from my guitar teaching days.

Long ago, I earned a BA in classical & jazz guitar from the University of North Texas ('94).

Michael, sounds like an interesting story. A degree in classical and jazz guitar to edm, and from the gist of this post, doesn't seem necessarily as opportunistic? Curious nonetheless.

Thanks Hummingbird, great advice! Let's just say my tension, drama, and comedy cues are all heavily electronica influenced, but it does seem to work.

Thanks,

Mike, when were you at North Texas? I was there from 84-88 (alto sax) with Pete McCann, Rick Peckham, Steve Shrog, Terry Hankins, Scott Sokolov and a large cast of characters. Did you study with Jack?
