To be clear, I'm recommending one means among many for unwinding after a loooong day in a mix chair; hard liquor ain't for everybody, but on a health tip, a couple of whiskies are an easy and pleasant way to help combat the congestive heart failure one might otherwise get from so much sitting. Frequent breaks and long brisk walks are also recommended.mikeymike2000 wrote:Hi Mojo,
So just so I am clear, you are recommending this a gear everyone should try, right?
All I know about Scotch is that Dewar's 12 is good. Aside from that I like Jack Daniels (and Absinthe). But I may try this out now, thanks.

I'll have to have a look for the Jura; I haven't seen it, this side of the pond, nor the Nikka-I'll be on the lookout there too, cuz I dig cool bottles. I get to try lots of new things, cuz my lovely wife, the Cookie Lady got promoted to Wine Lady, so we get to do a lot of fact-finding together. She says the Laphroaig is her most commonly shoplifted Scotch; apparently, Eagletonian thieves have great taste. (sorry for the insider Parks & Rec joke)KenSmith wrote:Cheers Mojo,
As a Scotsman now living in England I raise my glass to you sir, currently finding Jura superstition rather nice, particularly peaty.
If Im doing a more mellow mix I like to plug in the Jura origin......very good in the mid range and adds perspective to any mix !!

Glenfiddich was my first single malt; the training wheels, if you will. Before that, Walker Black, but it's blended-still very nice, but I find blended whiskies can give me a bad head, sometimes. If the peaty stuff makes you gag, try the Dalwhinnie; it's like baby's breath. But um, obviously not for babies, disclaimer.

I've heard of Ranger Creek; they're one of only a few upstart boutique whiskey distillers that aren't just rebranding a terrific rye made here in Indiana.Paulie wrote:I've recently started drinking bourbon... there is a nice local distillery about 8 miles form my house. I don't drink often, the stock I have now will probably last me several years.

Re: Single Malt Scotch
While researching classic cocktail recipes, I discovered that you can't make an authentic Old Fashioned without Rye whiskey; a Sazerac is similarly impossible, so the search was on for an affordable rye, cuz even Old Overcoat, er...Overholt, suddenly drifted north of twenty bucks a bottle, about the time the Craft Cocktail movement kicked in. Turns out, one of the world's finest rye whiskies is made here in Indiana and sold under various imprints ranging from $25-$75 USD. But it just so happens the same delicious product of Lawrenceburg, IN is available for as little as $12.99 from Ezra Brooks. Look for the green label.

Re: Single Malt Scotch
Canadian Whiskey is Rye Whiskey. We call it "Rye" in the great white north. And Canadian Club is respected up north and is pretty darn good for the price. $17 at Sam's. LOL. I shudder to think of the price in Manitoba. Crown Royal is obvi a little better, but so is the price.

The trouble with Canada is there's little distinction betwixt blends and straight whiskey. In these parts, Canada became a thing during Prohibition, because it was well-regulated, and unlikely to cause blindness or jake-leg.
