Composing music specifically for listings

Post by russellnollen » Sun Oct 04, 2015 5:37 pm

Former Taxi member here (about to renew very soon!). When I was a member, I submitted mostly songs that I had recorded prior to my membership. I later composed music especially targeted for particular listings that I had selected.
Now, do you recommend that I submit music from my own personal catalogue of compositions/songs or shall I select particular listings and then compose new music especially for those listings?
Thanks!

Hi Russell,

I would only submit songs I already had if they were a perfect fit for a listing. Length, style, edit points or not, etc. I've read of Taxi members submitting tunes they already had, but they fit the listings perfectly. The vast majority of writers I've talked to create new material for listings.

If you think you have something in your catalog that fits the listing, then submit it. But don't let that make you lazy. You could also write new ones for the same listing and/or for listings that grab you.

In other words, don't just sit there and look for listings for your existing material. Stay active, stay fresh.

Definitely agree with Paulie and Russell. I would in addition develop some relationships with others for collaboration. We have Facebook group called GYAWS which Stands for Get Your Ass writing Songs. I have some collaborators from there and we have Written some really Good stuff. If ur interested contact Bob Dixon Patty Boss Amanda Norton Anderson or Steven Guiles on Facebook and tell them I Sent you. Good Luck.

Thanks guys! Great advice as always - you're awesome!
I guess what I meant to ask is; What comes first?
Do you recommend composing/creating music, then hope to match it to a listing, or
Do you search the listings first, then create music just for that particular listing?
Thanks again!

Definitely the second one :) Obviously there will be times when you have a totally great song that you keep hoping a listing comes up for, and sometimes it will even be a strong pitch! But you could lose a lot of time waiting for the listings to match you rather than learning to match the listings so you always have an opportunity to submit your music :)
