Well I'll be darned. There IS a place to put a short bio. They didn't exactly make it easy to find. It shows up on your main profile page but NOT on individual links or playlists which kinda sucks.

Well at least my main page has a bio now: www.soundcloud.com/caseyh

Websites can be totally inexpensive (like $5 per month), but they do need to be maintained, so that counts on the 'time-eater meter'. Basically, get your domain, use a free wordpress template and manage the site yourself. Learning curve to setup, but once you have it tweaked right, it's easy. You can tweak the design too.

If anyone wants to know how to setup a website, let me know. I'm happy to help.

Websites are good, but not personal websites. It's better to get on Wikipedia than to have a personal website. People can hear the music on Youtube or Soundcloud, but the real background for people is on Wikipedia. That is where the bio and pertinent info regarding how someone became known should go.

Music sups, publishers, library execs, etc. need something quick and simple. The most effective thing is to provide a way that they can read a brief bio/credits about you and play tracks with the least amount of clicks.

These are busy people and you are one of hundreds or thousands pitching to them.

Wikipedia is kinda tough, but if you're not there, it's kinda like you don't exist as part of the internet's culture; it's as if you had no bio or resume. You can do that at LinkedIn, but that's not the first place most folks will look for info that you didn't write. You're a business? You should have a site that's completely under your control, precisely because MySpace and it's ilk (apologies to ppl who hate the word, "ilk") are prone to stampedes in the wrong direction. One (or more ) bad decision made by someone else and through no fault of your own, your web presence becomes a ghost town. If I buy a domain and maintain a site, I don't have to pay Soundcloud for extra formatting or playlists; I can do that with links on my own site.
