hey Dash.

I echo what has been said already. First off, I think you should determine what your objective is in writing. If you are a hobbyist, then you may not want to invest a substantial amount in producing your music. If you are seeking to monetize your songs, then you need determine the target market and tailor the songs accordingly.

To clear my head and organize my thoughts, I record all my ideas, melodies, lyrics on my iPhone voice memos. I also downloaded pro metronome so I can have an solid idea of the BPM and sing the song in my voice memo before I move to my DAW. Since you seem to be doing hip-hop, you should definitely google hip hop beats or Rapper name/hip hop and look at the multitude of sites that come up. Then you can write to the tracks you like as references and like Hummingbird said (I think), obtain them legally if you want to use the track further.

All the best,

Sasha
