Recording MIDI into a DAW from a hardware sequencer...

Hi All,

I have pre recorded midi tracks on an Atari ST that I would like to transfer to a DAW on PC. I was going to attempt this playing the tracks back via an interface into the DAW Tracktion. Is this possible does anyone know? I've done a little research but all I find is importing .mid files.

I did try it and it almost works.

The 520ST features a large number of ports mounted at the rear of the machine that remained largely unchanged over the ST's history. 2 MIDI ports (5-pin DIN, "IN" and "OUT/THRU")

So you would need a 5-pin din to usb A connector. If it doesn't work, try swapping the "in" and "out" 5-pin din connectors, "in" means in to the computer, not the Atari, a little counterintuitive.

Define, "almost". Tracktion can import ".mid" files in either Type 0 or Type 1, but much depends on how you're gonna transfer the files and maybe what media they're stored on.

I have a 1040 ST..I am using a Behringer interface connecting the MIDI out of the ST into the IN of the interface with the interface connected USB to the PC...I'll let you know what happens...
the only way I can save a .mid file is on floppy disk from the ST which does alllow for PC reading, but I have no floppy drive for the PC!

It would be great if I could get some of the work I did on the ST over to the DAW for improvement!

Worst case scenario, you may need to get an external USB floppy drive; they should be cheap and plentiful.

Connect the drive, drag and droop the files, easy-peasy.

2. There's no reason why the behringer interface won't work, it's just slower.
