Am I on the right road to Motown?

Post by CharlieErnst » Sun Sep 03, 2017 6:07 pm

Hi All,

If you get a chance to listen to this track to see if it's in the ballpark for the Motown-esque listing for the AD agency that's due tomorrow I would really appreciate the extra ears. I still want to do some tweaks, especially in the repeated verse type sections, but feel I am pretty close.

Thanks for the time over this holiday weekend...have a great weekend if you have the time off to enjoy.

Thoughts?

Hi Bombay Charlie.

I think your track is meeting the listing. Drum intro, baritone etc. Good progression and Motown groove.

My only thought is the sounds you have used for the strings and what I think is the horn section are not quite convincing. the musical idea is there, but the sounds are a bit midi. Try for a more disco sounding string section and rather than one patch for the horn section, open up the separate trumpet, sax and trom tracks. this might help the authenticity.

Hope these comments are not too late for you. Good luck. I wanted to have a crack at this one, but I ran out of time working on some other ones.

Good luck and all the best.

Hey Charlie!

Good work, so far!

A few points:

To my ear, the groove is a little draggy and for this listing it's all about vibe, about groove.

I'd give the drums some dimension and space with some 'verb and echo. (Adding a tambourine could really go a long way.)

Also, within the A section, a sprinkling of elements could keep things from sounding too repetitive.

It's a good idea, as well, to include the actual listing in your post. Makes it easier for folks to help. : )

Just my two cents, and all that ...

(My own submission "You've Got My Love MOTOWN instr," is on my TAXI page in case you wanna check it out
and give me any feedback you'd like to offer.)

Best of luck!

The music sounds like Motown..So good job on the writing and arrangement...

The instruments don't though. They sound like something from a home keyboard Motown preset. I can't imagine this clearing a high bar $20k listing but I wish you luck
