I think it's a bit of both. In my experience, talented singers are either too busy with their own material or have been wisely locked in by a lucky few good songwriters. By which I mean if you're a singer and you have a good songwriter consistently feeding you good material you're probably going to focus on that. Most of the rest of us instrumentalists are a dime a dozen. But having that special something in your voice and delivery is, well, special.

Indeed; and that's what creates the dilemma: if I could perform & deliver my own songs with a pro-sounding radio voice, my plate would likely be pretty filled up and I'd have no need for the likes of TAXI. It used to be that a reasonably good demo was sufficient to pitch a song to a performing artist to decide to use, or not; in which case, most likely an entire NEW production would happen. Nowadays, the competition is so great, and the bar so high, that even throw-away pitch productions have to be nearly on PAR (my initials :) ) with what the record companies are doing with high-dollar production budgets.
That's just the reality of things.

Therefore, without a benevolent & willing collaboration, chances are slim and none. Maybe I should form a Novelty band by that name
Slim & None.
I aint slim, but I'm gettin' None done. :? 8-)
BUT - I'm still gonna keep on with more funsongs. :P

Yeah I hear ya Peter. I'm no singer but I can hit a pitch (and use autotune). I used to be able to get the idea across with my own vocals. Those days are gone. People just really can't get passed anything that doesn't contain a stellar vocal performance. Even other musicians it seems.
I've had to settle for session singers. A few of which have said they don't need day jobs anymore based solely on remote recording work alone. I'm glad they are getting to do what they love but it makes it difficult. The last singer I used had a 2 week backlog of work.

Hey Joel, is there any particular resource that you're using to find these singers? I've seen a couple hiring websites floating around but I'm not sure how effective/legit they are. Could use some vocals myself.

By accident really in trying to find people that were just interested in performing/making music. Bandmix.com is a big one. Craigslist, of course. Ads at local music colleges will rake in a lot of results but you have to deal with kids. (Which can be fine.)

Vikki - thanks for the post. I'm just NOT INTERESTED in the world of instrumentals; so I won't be spending any time or effort there.
Maybe - if I had my own studio & live/work space to keep all my gear up and ready to record - I might sing a different toon.
For now - I'll just keep fishing for the right singer(s).
Cheers.
Meanwhile, back at the dinner table... enjoying a few bites of "crow"... :? :P
I just got my first forward - for an instrumental cue (harvested from a song by the same title).
