Film score pricing Q

Post by annayarbrough » Sat Nov 11, 2017 5:39 pm

I have a question for all of you folk more experienced in scoring film!

I just got contacted by a someone who wants me to score his work.

I've done a little bit of this kind of thing on a work-for-hire basis before, but it has been smaller sections or scenes. Which begs the question—any idea on how I should be determining rates? Anyone got a good formula?

Would love to know what's "standard"... then I can adjust from there depending on the details of the project (still waiting to hear back with more info).

(Also—if anyone has any general advice, tips, or comments on process I would LOVE to hear them!!)

Thanks a mil :D

I actually had a guy ask me the same thing a month or so ago. I found that Berklee College has a resource online that tells you the average salary of just about every musical job you can think of, both professional and independent. It was the first time I was asked this also and it at least gave me a tangible starting point that I could reference for what I knew about this project and its budget.
Hope this helps.

Ahh yes, I've seen this before. Problem is that it doesn't break anything down on a per-project basis, or account for all the variables (type of instrumentation, length, etc). Handy to have a copy of this though, so thanks for posting it! I had totally forgotten it existed.
