What genre is this song?
I have a music library interested in one of my songs and they are asking what genre is the song. I always have trouble with my songs and genres. I would appreciate input on what they think this genre category fits. They are also asking for the BMP's and the time. I'm not sure how to figure the BMP's and time is. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: What genre is this song?
Country/100 bpm/4:17
The style and phrasing of the instruments, especially the violin is country.
I used an online "tap to tempo" app to arrive at the tempo, I rounded it off from 97-98.
The time of the song on your Reverbnation page said it was 4 minutes 17 seconds long.
Imo, first and foremost in determining a genre, is the rhythm and how the rhythm is played. Some are easily recognizable like reggae or polka, and then you move on to the arrangement, if the rhythm is swing, if there is a fuller orchestra it's probably big band rather than jazz, or blues if it has a dirtier guitar, cleaner guitar, jazz, country if there is a fiddle, cajun if there is an accordion, bluegrass if there is a mandolin. Country waltz or Viennese waltz? The rhythm is the bones.

Re: What genre is this song?
In general though, the genre is probably what you listen to as a songwriter or what you had in mind when you wrote the song. It's very unlikely if you never listen to a genre to actually write a song in that genre, and if you did it would technically be avant-garde.

Hey, Tom (without reading other comments/answers/opinions) I wasn't more than a few measures into listening when I had to chuckle at the 'coincidence'...
that being: just yesterday I pulled out an old CD: Sittin' In by Loggins & Messina. That Intro sounded like it could've come right off that disc!
So - without even going more into it...I'd classify that as Country/Rock.
BTW: there was a surfer/musician/school-mate of mine from way back, by the name Tom Moran.
